Well, I’d heard the rumours and I’m still unsure what to think but damn! Had 2 bags of nats get mold within days of going g2g, put them at the back door to dispose of later and got busy for a few days, picked them up to throw in the compost and I’ll be damned, the myc has expanded over/through the mold at least quadrupling in size, like, is this shit for real?!

It’s definitely not healthy or happy but I’ll be monitoring this bag, at least for entertainment sake.

My moldy jars took over a year before they fruited!

Mine is eating likely penicilium at a fast rate, but I also used like the whole 100 mm petri

I saw that! Didn’t realise it was a year though “~” think I’ll just give my bags a month just to see what they do and decide from there, bloody impressive little suckers though, aren’t they?

14 days since S2B at 1:4 with a 1" top layer.  First tub of 3 is starting to pin.  Unlike the cakes, overlay is minimal.

Growing in 30L plastic tubs with 4 x 0.5cm holes at sub level on long sides, 3 x 0.5cm holes 5cm from top on short sides, lids turned upside down.  Daytime temp 70f, night time 58f.

Given that between 1 and 1.5g fucked me up on Friday, I'm not too fussed about a canopy on this grow, but all 3 tubs are looking good so far (unless anyone sees something suggesting otherwise?).

I'll update in a week or two. :mushroom2:

When are you guys casing? Immediately after spawning or waiting till full colonization. I’ve never cased the few tubs I’ve done and they’ve turned out fine. Wanna experiment though. I have black cap nats I just spawned yesterday. Was thinking about casing half and seeing which side performs better.

And what’s your favorite casing sub for these?

I know a friend who uses just plain coco coir.

No need to case, just use a pseudo casing at spawn.

I think mine's classed as pseudocasing?  After mixing the grain into coir and flattening it down with a flat plastering trowel, I add another litre or so of straight coir evenly over the top and press that down too.

I'm a bit of a 'tidy freak' and a smooth flat evenly coloured surface eases my internal conflict as well as apparently being appreciated by the shrooms.

I received an agar wedge of my first Nat back in the spring, and with my slow cultivation needs it ha
s finally gone to bulk.

Here's what the spawn looked like:

I spawned jars 1, 2, and 4 together in a SB, jar 3 I did not know what that weird look was, so I'm top fruiting it.

This is not how I would have preferred to do things, but it's the way it's turned out:
  • 24-Jun WBS sterilized
  • 17-Sep A2G
  • 21-Nov S2B
  • 3-Dec Myc pokes through thick psuedo-case

Everything was so old, but didn't look bad (except for that weird growth in the 3rd jar), so I'm just seeing what comes of it.  It would be great to get enough to clone, print, and eat my first Nats!

Thanks for the info/detail in this thread!

Those 3 look a bit iffy to me, but nats are pretty vigorous, so hopefully it won't be a problem.  2 1/2 months is a long time to keep uninoculated jars around.  Maybe, hopefully, they just dried out a bit.

I don’t case or pseudo case Nats. There’s no need for it. I didn’t even have issues with spawn I knew was bacterial at 1:4.

I tested a psuedo-casing vs no casing on the germ plate tubs I ran.

First flush, the cased one did much better.  Much more even pinset.

After the first flush, the cased one had a bazillion mini pins that never grew.  They were too small to pick off.  Some of them I literally rubbed off.  It made it a lot harder for the second flush to come in.

The uncased one was very uneven for the first flush.  After that it flushed much better.

They've both flushed about 6 or 7 times now, and I think they're about done.
