I have a 3 week old nat tub that I think is all overlay. Surface conditions look good though. Should I increase FAE or leave it alone? And what should I expect, generally speaking? I have seen people say it might take months more to fruit if there's overlay.

If you have plenty of moisture on the surface it may be worth trying to increase FAE. I haven't had to deal with overlay on my nats though, so I can't help you work through it as much as I'd like to.

if the surface looks good i'd leave it be for a couple more weeks.
anecdotally, if you get desperate or scheduled a trip with friends then pull the overlay off and make some tea. that stuff's bangin.

sorry, I have not read every post in this thread so I dont know if it has been mentioned. I personally have not dealt with the crazy overlay but I'm wondering if anyone has applied the common practice with oyster mushrooms which also overlay is to use a tool like a fork to scrape score like patches to produce better fruiting. I've seen people cut away overlay, but has anyone tried this approach?

Seriously though, if you’re going to cut away massive overlay, please explain how a fork is a problem. I have grown many oysters and a sterilized fork certainly makes its way successfully into mushroom growing…

I've been pulling overlay off with a fork because the tines slip between it and the sub pretty well, but have not seen any indications that it helps with fruiting. The overlay just grows back. If anything, scraping up the sub seems to help contams get a foothold while the myc is weakened.

Hey koala,I don't let the psuedocasing colonize completely. I put my tubs into fruiting conditions as soon as possible. That goes for fae also. I use polyfil and leave the top holes lose and run a fan in the room making sure it isn't blowing directly on my tubs. Just try to maximize fae and still keep your surface conditions looking good. Best of luck.

I had my own oyster farm for years, forks have no place what so ever.
Do they sell lab certified forks?

haha no man why so serious? I'm not suggesting anyone who is farming mushrooms throw kitchenware into their grows. What I am suggesting is that if people are running experimental grows and are already cutting away overlay, which is less than optimal, what other potential techniques could produce results, even if they are suboptimal. pretty simple and your focus on the fork concerns me... do you have some fork trauma?

Alot of Nat's are known to produce overlay. I had that with one of my Nat cultures as well. Just leave it be, the shrooms will come through the overlay.
Stressing the myc with scraping away overlay with a fork is just not beneficial in any way and shouldn't be recommended imho.
But hey, whatever floats your boat xD Everybody is free to do what feels right to them (I myself also don't do everything like everyone is recommending and get away with good results). Growing mushrooms isn't rocket sciences and there are many different ways people achieve good results.

Fellow nat enjoyers, has anyone here experienced blueing of caps at maturity (right before spores appear)? I have a shoebox of alleged nats going and some of the faster guys are turning a fairly deep blue throughout the cap. Can't get a pic uploaded right now but will post one later if needed.

When you post your picture make sure to get the gills. Mine turned more of a green color close to maturity.

There’s some really cool pictures of nat tubs that look almost like they’re taken in black and white. There’s definitely genes in some of them that change colors at the end.
