My first Natalensis grow!

Spawn was a touch bacterial, but no slim. Grains still broke up very easily. Spawned 2.5 literal quarts of grain spawn to 8 quarts of coir (1:3), split between two subs. From inoculation of bulk sub to seeing hyphal knots was about the same time frame as PE. Spawn run looked great! The myc appeared to be indifferent to the bacteria.

First flush yield was underwhelming. 22 g dry between the two subs. Perhaps cleaner spawn will help with this. Also I might play around with different sub shapes. Next time I might try more flat and wide. Some say that spaghetti/snake mushrooms are from poor FAE. My setup is a martha-type, being fairly wide open for FAE. Definitely more than ample for cubes. Perhaps Nats just require more like from an active FAE system?

Most of the mushrooms were sterile.

The Experience:

I took 3g one night, split up. 2g up front, then 1 more a couple hours later. The whole experience was mentally very gentle. Very clear-headed and minimally visual. These would be excellent specimens to take at a concert or hike. I had a wicked stomach ache though, holy smokes. I don't know if it was the mushrooms or the beer and pizza that I consumed beforehand. Will try again, but this time "pre-medicate" my bowels with ginger root just in case.

More often than not my natal cultures have like 4 good flushes instead of two huge ones like cubes.

Those look good, that myc is looking like wheat grass

Hi All!
Long time lurker, first time caller.
First time with nats also
These were both S2B on the same day- 9/16
Same genetics, same sub- coir only but look like they are advancing totally different to me.
Does it look like one might have overlay?
Or is it too early to tell?
If so, is there anything I can do about it now?
Thanks for any suggestions!

Second one looks super healthy, prob gonna overlay at least a little.

Top one doesn’t look bad but also doesn’t look like any natal myc I’ve had. That said I’ve also had overlay every time.

Hi guys

I hope this is the right thread..

Thanks to the generosity of Moopers I got my first chance to try growing Nats.

I put a few spores from the print to agar and made a syringe that I used to noc some PF Cakes (I find I get better results with cloning and thought it would be a quick way to the taste test).

The print was really good, producing a donor plate that looked good enough to go straight to grain, but I did a bunch of transfers from it anyway at the weekend.

The PF jars colonised really quickly with the most rhizo mycelium I've seen so far.  I birthed them last week and a couple are fruiting already.

Two things have struck me about the cakes though and I wonder what your thoughts are:

There's a lot of what appears to be overlay(?).  Reading through here I've flipped the lid of the water tub to increase FAE (a suggested method to reduce overlay), but I'm concerned it may be getting a bit dry - see pictures).  Is this normal, and is there anything further I can try?

When I open the lid and take a good sniff, I swear I can detect a fresh lemon sherbet type of smell.  It's completely different to the usual cube smell, and nothing like the smell when there's nasties in there (I've an acute sense of smell).  Has anyone else noticed this?  Should I be worried?

Many thanks

Ooh, Nats on cakes! Maybe give another light misting to up the water bead count and keep lid flipped. Overlay is a very typical thing with these. Definitely clone those first to fruit. The cakes look good though. Next time try a coating of coir instead of verm if you have it.

Many thanks for the encouraging reply cozmyc.

I did wonder how they'd do on cakes as I saw they like a lot of sub & there's no way to control that in a PF jar.

I'll do a bit of misting as suggested - thanks.

The transfers I did on Sunday are already looking promising, and I took a few clones from the first 'clump' of fruit at the same time (albeit without any signs that they're taking off yet).

Any thoughts on the smell?  It's really nice, but I suspect the dried fruits will still taste awful.

I've not gotten a lemony smell, but my sense of smell isn't the best. I do prefer the smell and taste of them over cubes though. Very mild taste once dried too.

Hey, long time no see. Still working myself into disability at the farm.

Been receiving feedback that natalensis have been fruiting poorly inside bags, but thats hard to beleive.

Has anyone experienced this, either in itself, or with a culture performing in tubs

Basically fruiting poorly inside a intact bag with a 0,5m filter

Appreciated

I’ve had quite a few cultures that just fruited poorly period, that would be my guess cuz I don’t see why bags would make much difference.

snakes and other cultures were fine in tubs with a single filter hole, maybe its the lack of casing in bag subs. in general bag subs seems to be somewhat easier to dry out than tubs

I’ve fruited Nats in bags a few times now. Recently I’ve been testing my low spore Nat cultures. Some of them are a bit nicer than others but none of them seem to hate the bags.

I seal the tops of the bags until I see pins and then I cut the tops off, seal them with tape but leave a little space at the ends for air holes. Seems to work ok. I can adjust the size of the holes by tucking them in if I need to.

Edit - here’s a pic to illustrate. Because of the height of the bag not too much moisture gets lost but there is enough fae to make the Nats happy.

Just read the last 50 pages of this thread over the past few days in anticipation of receiving some P. natalensis spores. I am excited like it was my first time again.

I've grown a bit of cubes but it has been a while and I also never keep notes of anything so there are a few details I am kind of hazy on I am wondering if someone could enlighten me.

I am used to 1 quart of spawn in a shoebox with a 1:1 ratio and a pseudo casing- how does growing at a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio work, will I straight up use 3-4 shoeboxes per quart or do I fill the shoebox more and maybe only use 2-3 shoeboxes/quart or something like that?

Also, is the biological efficiency of P. natalensis similar to cubes or does it yield significantly differently? I wonder if that extra substrate colonization, overlay, or just the species differences results in significantly different output.

Last time I grew cubes after getting my new big boy pressure cooker I kind of got over excited making a ton of spawn jars and ended up growing too many shrooms and I am hoping to avoid that, but also don't want to lowball my grow either.
