A.k.a said: They definitely donβt yield like cubes unless you get one of the freak cultures that puts out a full canopy for three flushes.
I get 120g-150g dry from 2 quarts nat spawn in 1 or 2 flushes. My most recent grow had bad overlay and still gave me 144g dry, and it's not done yet. On a per qt basis, that's better than what I get from cubes. I get like 170g-220g in 1 to 2 flushes from 4-5 qts cube spawn, but other cube growers probably get better yields per qt than me. I don't usually go to a 3rd flush for either.
I also prefer to trip on pans and tamps, tho. I mostly grow nats for the novelty, to give to friends, and because getting decent yields of good quality (not spaghetti) pans and tamps requires an active setup and more work. I haven't noticed a big difference between the nat and cube trip experience, except (maybe) less nΓ‘usea. IME, nats haven't been significantly stronger than regular cubes. My friends prefer nats to non-PE/mutant cubes or tamps. Most want TW2/enigma over nats. But all want pans over anything else.

No pins on this bottle yet. I opened it for fruiting and covered with a layer of coir on 02/05/2023.
It made an initial layer of overlay. Part of that layer seems to have turned yellowish. now it looks like another mycelium layer is starting to cover it.
Any advice on what to do?
It's a 1L bottle of verm and WBS inoculated with Natalensis LI. Now covered with a ziploc bag with some 10-15 syringe holes.

That makes me wonder, anyone get overlay on outdoor or greenhouse grows?

Im about to spawn 3 qts. Whats the best way of preventing overlay? High ratio with a top layer?

Most of us think the overlay is mostly genetic. A.k.a. those are beautiful.

So in other words its about picking a good culture from the start? My cultures were very tame on agar, though it was 1% LMA. Hopefully ill be good.

Yeah, just run it and see. I ran mine at a 1:5 ratio with about a half inch top layer.

I have zero overlay in my greenhouse grows. But the fruits are staying pretty small, around 2" tall but with a thick cap. I'm not sure if it's my genetics, my indoor ones from the same genetics grow very large, or if it's environment related. Temps, airflow, soil type, etc...

Maybe your sub or moisture levels are causing it? Maybe too much direct sunlight is stunting them? If not, I'd guess genetics.
Here are a couple more photos from last year.

As someone recommended here before, I have tried to leave mine 15 - 20 minutes of direct sun. I don't know if it has influenced not having an overlay or it was just a coincidence, but an incredible and healthy pinset has come out without any overlay.
