AspectOfTheCreator said: I read that when starting fresh with Natalensis, it's all about choosing an appropriate culture so as to not get overlay later on. What am I looking for when it comes to agar?
My best luck for growing nats instead of overlay was using a plate pin clone with a compressed substrate and compressed 1 inch cv top layer using p9’s compressed top layer tek

My nats may have been a lucky wedge but I haven't had any overlay with this particular culture. It definitely provides🤙

Are we certain the overlay is entirely a bad thing? I feel like maybe it provides some benefits, which is why it happens. I'm not saying just a blob of overlay is great, but maybe a few of those wispy tendrils with moisture on them. It feels like they could benefit the surface conditions in some way.
I don't know anything though, so maybe not.

After that you move onto grains, agar, monotubs. Agar is easy, just do it. Other useful links - Picture guide for how things should look and proper surface conditions guide Growing APE or PE? When I would experience overlay on my other nat cultures they never provided a solid canopy even with a casing.

Well, I'll keep an eye on it, I got 4 nats going right now. Perhaps I'll notice the same relation.

I updated some of the sections of my natalensis grow notes in my signature. If anyone is looking for some condensed info on growing collected from this thread, take a look. I had to take a break from cult, but I've been keeping tabs here.
I just started my first nat grows in a while. I'm growing from a print I took and from a print I received a while ago from PitcherCrab. Wish me luck!

Exact same parameters as cubes, set and forget tubs. Easy as that with Nats🤙

All 22 of the JW123 plates look different so I should get some variety. Hopefully they’ll start pinning soon!

My partner and i are at the early stages of a joined project in doing single spore isolations focussed mainly on this species, as we obtain monokaryotic cultures i will gladly help distribute to any wanting to help develop new cultivars for this amazing species. Will update as we progress! Have a good day you great people.

Nat mycelium sure grows aggressively. I've inoculated 3 batches of agar with nat spores and some cube varieties and nats always are the first to germinate.
I've barely had a single plate of cubes germinate in the time I'm already thinking about doing a second transfer for a Natalensis plate.

Finally getting a pinset after peeling a ton of myc off this MS tub.
Only had one normal looking mushroom the first flush so far too, making progress on stabilizing the variety.

The overlay
