My friend gets it free of charge from the local zoo, all he needs is a bucket and a shovel. Says he just called one day and asked and has been getting it ever since.
From what I've observed in other threads, elephant, rhino and buffalo dung sourced from local zoos all produced amazing results.

I had a stubby fat dense clone going for a while… looked just like those. When I’m feeling less sleepy I’ll find the pictures of them 🤪

There are a few of the fatty natties

First Nats. They're a lot smaller than I expected.
I have pins in my dishes that are bigger.

Cheers Chris - thank you for the welcome 😊 The Ol Natalensis really are shape shifters. I think that they have a lot of genetic variability / capacity that helps them survive in a wide range of environmental conditions. They have not been very domesticated yet so the genetics have not been selected down. Keep flying your freak flag Sir Natalot!

Very nice!
So I’ve got these two plates going. Where would you more experienced nat cultivators recommend taking transfers from?

I was thinking those spots looked nice too. The one thing I keep reading about nats is that they can get really bad overlay and I have no idea what to be selecting at this point (or if there’s even any way to avoid it by in-vitro selection). I took two out of the second plate (7 and 10). I had already taken one out of the first plate too, but just the nicest looking bit from the smaller drop that germinated a little later. Is it possible to get this species to pin in a dish? I’ve always liked getting clones that way.

it will not only pin, it will fruit in a dish (nah I'm exaggerating) but the overlay issue cannot be solved in vitro imo. run a few and see what you get. if they all overlay start again with another print/swab from another source.

Finally got some natal agar I'm happy with (pic is after 7 days from transfer). Is there any way to tell if overlay is likely on agar so I don't have to deal with it going to bulk?

I haven't grown my first nats yet, but based on what's been said/shown over the last few pages here, it seems that nats have the same capacity for genetic diversity as cubes, but it just hasn't been explored nearly as deeply.
Perhaps 10 years from now we'll have squat nat, natty lite, nat envy, golden Natty's, etc. Hopefully the names will be superior to those presented, but that's what I'm thinking. Just like pans and cubes, eventually there won't be nat, but nats. We just need to do the work.
If I'm somehow way off because I know little, I apologize.

After that you move onto grains, agar, monotubs. Agar is easy, just do it. Other useful links - Picture guide for how things should look and proper surface conditions guide Growing APE or PE?
