Hi everyone!
I decided to start growing a couple months ago and the NSS strain was the one I chose. I only found this thread recently and have read through the whole thing.. Looks like I decided to start this hobby with a very tricky variety...
I first started searching because it has taken so long compared to the Tek I was following. I have been following a shoebox tek and I have used rye grain spawn. My spawn and boxes have been looking extremely clean and I think I have one close to pinning.
This one I spawned to coir on 09 August:

Here's a close-up of the surface showing some knots I think?

I'm really hoping that this works out and I get pins but this thread has been making me nervous! Any input on how you think my boxes are looking will be appreciated!

Looks pretty good but these things can really go anywhere from that point. Good luck.

Yeah that surface looks good, exactly like my rusty and Whyte Gold did.
All of mine had gotten really overlayed by three weeks so hopefully you’re ok.

Ok that's great news. I poured a lot of energy into these tubs so really hoping for at least a few pins

Thanks! Yeah I figured from reading this thread... This variety/strain seems to be a bit of a loose canon.

Nocced up some little natalensis rye half pints and some plates so i can get in on this action. Some of the pics i’ve seen in this thread so far have been absolutely BONKERS I have a theory that these guys are going to like tons of FAE and something obviously needs to change with these surface conditions or the substrate density or SOMETHING because this overlay is craycray. I have some field aged organic horse shit i just grabbed from my uncle’s farm so i’m gonna try that stuff but i’m thinking the sand idea may be up the right alley. I was planning on spawning to very hard-packed (dense) Hpoo and then casing with a 3/4 or 1 inch layer of straight wet verm. Hoping maybe i can get a crazy pinset like that without the overlay issues. Maybe somebody will beat me to it and try that i was thinking of trying to even possibly case with straight perlite (1/2-3/4inch thick) just to prevent the crazy overlay from being able to easily take over and prevent fruiting. Drastic, I know, but something definitely needs to get figured out and i’m just as tickled about this as anybody. What do you guys think about my incubation setup? Between the top and bottom sets of bins is a clone root heating mat that gets up into the 90’s when insulated with clothes. The ambient temp in the bottom bins is about 75-85 depending on time of day and the top bins sit around 80-90. I was hoping the 90 degree temps weren’t hurting anything but these PF jars have blown up ever since this guy has been on.

That’s way too hot. The heating pad will probably dry out or fry the bottom of jars and tubs. I started running into problems at about 85f with cubes.
Other than that looks good, somebody’s got to make a breakthrough here soon. I’m guessing we’ll have these things close to mastered by the end of the year.

Sorry for the crappy//grainy pics Camera bust Had to borrow one to snap these from this outdoor patch on straw/manure And trust These pics dont do them justice The colours on the caps of these are insanely beautiful Almost golden yellow & all thickkk and meaty-unlike the thinner taller fruits with smaller caps seen when grown indoors in tubs

I think low spawn is the key. I got 0 bottom pins or side pins on my last tub. It was spawned 1:1 on coir but I only used 1 qt and gave it little water. Low spawn and a thin top layer
ZZ those look like cubes forsure, I wonder why growing them indoors causes the caps to grow smaller and without veil remnants

Those are amazing. It’s weird because even though they look like cubes there’s just something unique about the coloring. I like how the spores dust the super pale cap edges so they look grey.
I’m loving the bruising too.

Waiting for LC to finish then some will definitely go on straw. I love straw for cubes and tamps too so that was my first thought for these.

Those outdoor are beautiful Zifozonke.
Too bad these aren't getting beefier but still kinda cool to look at.

Man this tub puts out some heat compared to the rest of my traditional cube tubs going. Lift the lid to take a pic and get blasted in the face by a heat wave. Might be noteworthy.

It varies alot according to region Here on the eastern side where I stay its stays pretty warm Lows in winter average about 14 Highs in summer 30 With high humidity Of course these are averages and the odd day can be less or more but inland a hour or two weather is way different Freezing//snow on mountain ranges in winter //high temps in summer with heavy storms... Were coming into spring now so temps are slowly warming again but there is still snow on mountains inland at the moment and temps in the morning have been a little low.

Damn grim that’s a badass pinset but some weird mushrooms.
One of the early pages has the scientific info on natal. It was found like a mile above sea level I think too.
Idk if these are from letting it get a little too dry or if it’s almost spent but they’re different lol.

Has anybody else noticed the caps seem to fall off these really easily?

If the sample was found at a mile up it could explain the differences were seeing, given how air works at sea level (where I am) vs at altitude.

Nice! Is this a first flush? In your experience, do the fruits seem to change from the first to second flush? I have read that some varieties (like PE) often struggle/blob on the first flush and have an amazing second flush.

Yes this is first flush. With thatNatalensis IME the "blobs" will get worse but the fruit can still get much bigger in later flushes.
