Also curious about open air with a thick casing layer and humidity controls.
Someone say bottles? Just cased them tonight.

Hell yeah! That’s what I’m looking for! So from what I was able to find it looks like you want some extra water in there and a pretty dense substrate, right? Looks like that nat myc rips through everything. I’m cooking up some cube bottles tonight to get back into the groove. How thick do you make your casing layer?

Casing layer is about 1/4” of verm. My substrate is not dense at all. I mixed up a bunch to fill bottles that I was using for pans, so they are hpoo/straw/verm/wheat. Ended up using some of the bottles for these and some for semps. We’ll see how it works out.

This thread really is too big to navigate without that feature, I am still only learning bout nats, have not got them yet. Maybe 1/3 of the way through this thread!

Gotcha. Hopefully this cube bottle recipe will work well with the nats too. I’m trying out rice hulls instead of verm since I’d like to minimize my exposure to silica dust (I know I could just wear a mask but verm is kinda gross IMO). I understand they’re pretty acidic so I added a little lye to the soak water and soaked them with the oats for an hour. In the bottles I’ve got coir, oats, rice hulls, garden gypsum, and some powdered dog food (I use it for my agar too lol). Planning to case with peat moss.
I’m just getting back into mycology after about 5 years and I’m kinda winging it here but that’s part of the fun. If this doesn’t work I’ll just try again. I’m hoping the nats will thrive in my super dry climate.

I’m not saying not that but I was actually just saying that I am completely noob to nats! I have not grown in almost a decade now and have not even eaten cubes in about as long. Recently become reinterested in the myco world considering advancements in technique and genetics! Im particularly interested in Nats right now!

Is there a consensus on which vessel to grow these in? I just started three SFF shoeboxes as they are unmodded. Ive never grown in tubs before only in bags, so I figured it was the most n00b friendly.
Since they need more fae are there better options than an unmodded shoebox?

they dont need more fae than cubensis. they don't really care as long as you don't suffocate them.

Sorry to disagree but Nats love extra FAE compared to cubes. They do fine in same amount but better with more, IMHO. That being said they grow fine in unmod shoeboxes, at least the purple handled ones.

First flush in an unmodded 6L sterilite shoebox. I kept the latches closed until they started pushing the top. Then I threw a grocery bag with some holes on top. I was going to do the grocery bag from spawn but we’ve got the heat on and I didn’t want to dry it out too much since it’ll be in the air flow no matter where I put them in my place. They probably would’ve gotten bigger if they had more fae.

Another shoebox pinset starting to get serious.

Interesting pheno that came up on a previous shoebox

One thing that surprised me is how long you can let nats go after you think they’d be done. I’ve only grown cubes before so I’m used to picking once the veils drop. I have yet to see a veil on any of my nat shoeboxes except on the box with the pin set coming in. These also may be low spore nats because I can leave them for a day or two once they start dropping spores and my boxes don’t look like an ink cartridge exploded in them.

i unlatch them as soon as they have properly pinned. i also open the box briefly in the first 2 or 3 days for a full air exchange. most likely not necessary but i feel that they love it. then keep unlatched until they are half way, then dub tub. they get bigger in later flushes.
i would just do the same for cubensis.
