DERRAYLD said: High fae Nats

Hey Derrayld,
Had great success switching to PastyWhytes EZ dial monos for cubes. In your opinion, would the original EZ mono design accommodate ideal nat FAE or given the general recommendation for more FAE, should more holes be incorporated?
Have only run nats in unmodified, unlined tubs/shoeboxes and had nothing but issues.
This is gonna depend heavily on the conditions and airflow in your area/grow space. As a general rule you want as much fae as possible while still maintaining conditions. I run multiple cubes/species all in setups similar to pasty’s tubs with great results.

I run them in pasty tubs and also in monotubs with large poly stuffed holes. Just give them fae, the more the merrier.
Thanks guys.
Several pages back, I talk about how my first run with nats was an absolute disaster; realized with future trials that, for whatever reason, my climate is not conducive to using shoebox or larger unmodifieds, even with cubes. Had even worse results with the fish filter tek in some recent runs, which was kind of strange given that in the past, these were my primary setup with the best results.
Subsequent cube trials with PW EZs fixed the problem, so I'll give the next nat run a go.

I prefer running Nats in monotubs with poly and I prefer growing them in winter as it seems to slow them down and allow them.to get much larger.
The reason I say this is purely based on my experience getting different Nat appearance from the same culture just changing a few variables.
They seem to grow larger in cooler temperatures with high fae and over field capacity sub.
Probably purely anecdotal but always worth a try to achieve large fruit on the first flush.

How thick is your substrate? It looks kind of thin from that side pic.

plus what was the amount of spawn. Ratio? It looks like in the second picture you have ideal surface conditions and quite a few knots. It could be genetics. I'm not sure where you got your spores from. My cube looking ones produced less than the snakes, but from what I can see from my couch you should have gotten more.

These are tiny tubs, I used a half pint of brf cake to a couple handfulls of coir and then compressed the shit out of them. I ordered from a well known supplier.
I'mm still learning, these are my first tubs and I just winged it! Next time I'll do proper measurements. I'm getting enough and can't complain too much so far!

I followed the SFF shoebox tek to great success with nats. Perhaps you might look at that.

I by no means am an expert on these. I can give you my opinion and that's all it is. This could be what's going on. Half pint isn't much compared to what a lot of people use. I personally ran 2qt or 3qt spawn per 20qt ez dial mono. I ran 3 tubs and got close to 11oz dried oz out of them. From my understanding the more spawn you use the more shrooms you get. And if I understand correctly it averages about 1-1.5 dry oz per 1qt of spawn if you get a good bio efficiency out of it. So by that you might be looking at 1/4 of what a qt would produce over the life of a tub. If that is what you are getting from the life of the tub then it is what it should be. If someone can confirm what I'm saying or can straighten me out and teach me the correct answer please do.

Anyone tried these in bottles or outdoors yet? I’ve tried my best to look through this thread but at almost 400 pages it’s kinda overwhelming.
Also curious about open air with a thick casing layer and humidity controls.

Yes, I forget who did a trashcan in the yard with a hose in it to water them, but they had good results. I'm sure I've seen bottles but that was about 6 months back.

Awesome! I might try a shoebox or two but my plan right now is to do bottles and use the spent ones to inoculate an outdoor compost pile which has worked well with cubes in the past. I made a couple plates on the 22nd of last month and they already have decent growth. Anyone ever tried running a culture from an invitro pin? I was planning on letting one of the two MS plates get totally overgrown and transferring out the nicer one in this pic. I’m pretty excited by how fast this one is growing.
