I’m still reading through this thread, but hoping for soem clarity around P. natalensis

Are all Blue Meanies (non-cyan) actually P. nat, or is there another BM that is actually P. Cube?

I have a project of BMs growing that the supplier stated was not the P. Cyan variety, but the P. Cube variety.

Just trying to understand what the heck I’m growing lol

Natalensis have nothing to do with Blue meanies, where did you get that idea from?

Blue meanie is a slang term for pan cyan, and then somebody decided it would be a good idea to name a cube the same thing :shrug2:

Natalensis is just natalensis

Thank you.  Are Nats about the same difficulty level to cultivate as Cubes?

Pretty much the same, give them lots of fea.
Don't harvest unless they drop spore because they just keep growing well after the veil opens.

Most often the veil will be low down on these.

Thanks again D!  This explains why I read / hear about demand for a low spore load Nat variety.

The source I got my spores from called them Blue Meanies (P. Natalensis). After growing them I'm positive they're nats.

May or may not have anything to do with Blue Meanies, but some people are calling them that.

Not sure if we're allowed to link spore traders here, but if you just search "Natalensis Spores" in google you'll see what I'm talking about.

I would suspect the problem comes from not understanding species origins (which is something you’d expect a vendor would know). There is a variety of Panaeolus Cyanescens from Natal, South Africa known as Blue Meanies. Now that Ps. Natalensis is becoming popular, I’d hypothesize people are confusing the two species since both originated in Natal. And to make it even more confusing, there is now a variety of Ps. Cubensis being sold as Blue Meanies.

I’m old enough to remember when the Pans from Natal (original Blue Meanies) first started appearing on vendor menus, and now there are at least three stabilized Ps. Natalensis floating around US vendors (Natalensis, Natal Super Strength Natalensis, and Low Spore Natalensis).

Pretty sad you can’t trust vendors these days. And without DNA sequencing, you can’t be 100% sure that the variety is what it was sold as.

Hoping some of them will be fit for grains next weekend.
