Lil update on my first nat tub.

Was bitchin’ about this tub before because it was only developing overlay. 27 days since spawning and not a pin in sight. Microdosed the overlay which was remarkably impotent. Was so annoyed and disappointed.

Followed advice in this thread to resist the urge to bury this fucker. But I did put the tub outside to get some relief from the mockery. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand now it has decided to pin 32 days after spawning. Several eager side-pins and a few pins on top. Outside temps have been ~70f-90f. It seems quite content in the shade. I just give it a mist when it looks dry.

Maybe it would have pinned anyway if I’d left it indoors.
Maybe it’s digging the heat outside.
Maybe it loves the bigger temp swings outside.

So, first nat grow.
Got pins.
Great success.

:resignednonacceptance:

They enjoy the heat for sure!  Couple that with a little humidity and plenty of fae and these boys are happy campers.  Glad you didn’t totally toss it to the dogs and are being rewarded now.  Patience grasshoppa 😁

Threw some colonized millet in these rye and coir all in one bottles 3 days ago. Gave them a nice shake just now.

The one jar on the top left has a big clump ontop that didn't get very far when I shook at inoculation

The clone culture from Tub #1 is ready for grains. Kind of excited to see how it turns out!

could someone please enlighten me about the consensus regarding a casing layer.
i was planning to go for 1 inch coir, but as overlay seems a real issue with the natalensis, what is your take? as i have coco and verm on hand id prefer to use that.
is it preferable to case at half/full colonozation?
shoebox would be the dimension

kind regards

1" coir is fine, Nats are all culture dependent regarding the overlay.
Many of us have overlay free cultures.

I’ve read a lot about nats, and I’m a little unclear where current understanding is. I’m still on agar with my first nat grow.

Is it still thought that more tomentose mycelium is less likely to cause overlay issues, or at least pin more easily? Do clones from successful grows produce cultures more likely to be overlay free/easier fruiting?

I can’t wait until these are ready for grain. Growing 10 shoeboxes from swabs and hoping to get at least one good performing tub.

I’m just starting with nats too, the first shoebox is colonizing well. I did two mini grows and had no overlay, the myc was definitely more cloud like but not a super thick layer.

I always do the p9 compression on the spawn mix and the top layer, seems to be working for meh so far

I only ran one side by side experiment so it’s not really enough to say, but I had MUCH less overlay with tomentose mycelium.

Anything that shoots thick rhizo and climbs the walls of the plate has consistently produced extreme overlay for me.

You have to grow your culture to find out.

I was unaware of the P9 thread where he covers this until you mentioned it. I’m 9 pages in and loving it. Thanks for pointing it out. I have a cube grow starting next week and am going full bore p9 shoeboxes in shoeboxes in fruiting chamber and seeing what comes of it. Looks like a TEK up my alley, and his one and done flushes with high yields are also of great interest to me.

Thanks!
