Has anyone tried flipping the non fruiting subs over? It'd probably just overlay again but who knows?
Funny, I went back to spores to find a heavy overlay, non fruiting pheno to put to a bag of rice & pearled barley. Let it sit a few months/year and test the mycelium then!

These guys were spawned from BRF to pure coir shoeboxes 6 days ago. This is only my second shoebox grow.. first Natal. I don't know if I need to adjust or if this is just what a Natal grow looks like. Feels like super fast grow.
The cakes were similar though, I inoculated at the same time as some PE and those are not ready to spawn yet.
These are B+ spawned at the exact same time, though, from BRF's that had already given 2 flushes.. so they are tired. I don't think this is recommended, but I had extra coir and wanted to experiment.
For a better reference.. these are Golden Teacher, also from BRF, growing in same space, more substrate, but same ratios. These were spawned 18 days ago.
The surface looks like it has other things growing than just Nats. Looks like white mold to me.

Not a pin in sight. Overlay just chillin’ and producing metabolites.
Guess I’ll harvest some overlay and dehydrate so I have something to consume. Maybe bury it outside in hopes that a pin finally appears. Probably go back to spores and try again. Sound like a reasonable plan or would you recommend some other more productive action?
Are you running the 5 fae top holes on each end? Reason I ask is when I added 2 additional fae top holes, my nats took off! They had been pinning very sparsely prior to that. I’d try more fae before I gave up on the tub if you haven’t already.

Yes. 1 lower & 5 upper holes on each short side. 2 lower holes on each long side. All are open so it's at max fae. I could add more fae at the lid level if we believe that would encourage pinning.
I just harvested a respectable amount of overlay. More plentiful & hearty than I expected. It's dehydrating now. Hopefully I'll have time to sample it tomorrow.

I love hearing about people's overlay experiences..please do share.
One guy said 0.3 was stronger than 0.5g of APE. Though it'd be culture dependent, go in with caution!

aha, that is interesting. how did you not get overlay then? spawn sub ratio? fae? how did you succeed without overlay? what kind of tub?

Done all kinds of ratios and tub setups and not had overlay. Luck I guess. 1:2 and 1:6 just for some testing. Both pasty ez dials and unmodified tubs.
I think it's purely just genetic.
You get some mighty fine yields without the overlay. Like they get stuuuuupid big. And will grow bigger and bigger even after the veil breaks.

Definitely genetics, sub ratio plays very little factor.

Yes, that would be awesome. I'm going to start miraculix testing all worthy cultures somewhere down the line.

I would try drilling 2 additional holes where the 5 already are, so it kinda looks like a circle of holes with one in the middle. Let it run for 5 more days like that and see if you get pins. You can always cover the holes up for next run if it doesn’t work. Just from what I’ve seen, the smallest increase in fae can make all the difference!

Bridge2far,for whatever reason I didn’t think to ask what your surface conditions look like? When I ran the nats in a pasty ezdial, it kept beads on top of the overlay. It was kinda weird looking to me but the culture liked it! Guess it’s no different than wanting beads on your sub, because essentiallly the overlay has become the surface of the sub. You can see it in this pic where the myc ain’t so fluffy.

My conditions have been the same as what you describe. Even at max fae, it maintained moisture beads on the overlay. Any cube would have thrived in those conditions. Wish I knew what variable to fuck with to piss these nats off just enough to initiate pinning.
Overlay Consumption Report:
Ended up with 24 dry grams of overlay. Pulverized a bit and consumed 0.3g (my usual microdose weight). 15 minutes later I felt the first hints of lightness of head & body. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand that’s about all. The dose did boost my mood & motivation, which is what I hope to get from every microdose. But it was a very mild experience. Positive but mild.
Time for me to streak more plates and try again.
