I’m starting to think that the super thick overlay with droplets all over is a reaction to contam. I had quite a few tubs do that and they did end up fruiting some very potent mushrooms but took a long time, like one took over a month.
I kind of think the myc is extremely sensitive to bacteria, to the point that even a small amount that wouldn’t be noticeable usually causes those metabolites and swelling.

Why would it be sensitive to bacteria though? In nature they fruit from literal SHIT.

From all that I’ve read about Nats, there’s something that I’m sure we’re missing. Something fuckin obvious as to why it’s reacting this way to indoor, controlled cultivation. Either that or it just doesn’t fuckin like it!

My Shiitake bleeds a lot too. Does it mean they don't like it? Not necessarily (in my humble opinion). Could just be that they're reacting weirdly to a high spawn ratio.

I would say it does but then again that’s only going on instinct and not fact based research so I would be inclined to say you’re right as I know you know a shit load more than I do! There’s gotta be some common denominator though. Have we tried Nats on HPOO and sawdust. I’m afraid I don’t know enough about Nat and it’s natural habitat to make an assumption.

I think it's just genetics or maybe dependent on the specific type of bacteria/contam. A month ago or so I spawned a bunch of jars that smelled awfully sweet (bacterial af) and the shoeboxes did relatively fine, without any overlay. Would love to hear others' experiences with bacterial spawn but I don't think most people even try to fruit shitty spawn lol

Never seen myc climb that high up the tub/liner accept for Natalensis!

I have tried them on hpoo and sawdust mix, and in some spots there was this overlay with droplets, I called it "myco cider", and it smelled pretty bad.

The thing is, it kept making it in some spots on the container even after the substrate detached from the walls. So there was the myc block, mycelium reaching over air attaching to the container, and where it was touching the container was guttation. Kinda strange. I am sure in my case there was bacteria because of the smell, bubbles and cloudiness of the exudate, but I have a hard time believing people who grow on coir would get something like that.

When I send bacterial spawn, the surface leaks enough that I come back once or twice a day to soak it up with a paper towel. Sometimes it's green, sometimes blue, mostly light yellow. All of mine have been on CVG. Doesn't seem to make much of a difference in the overlay, though. Clean cultures still fluff up for me, but they don't take forever to fruit.

I blink and they drop spores everywhere. Might be my conditions, but I suggest keeping a close eye on them once the veils break if you plan to print. They print dark and heavy for me.

P-Nat doing what P-Nat does. Crawling up the side and onto the bottom of the top of the plate. I forgot about this plate. Maybe it's time to send it to grain. Is this the good kind, the bad kind or another kind?

Finally some nats fruiting other than on plates!
yesterday close up:
today whole mini-tub:
But I'm not exactly ecstatic about this so it's back to spores I think...though they may prove me wrong...

That pic won't expand, but I was hoping more for something like this plate pin:

This isn't from that particular strain, though I have a couple pins on agar from its cousins. Nats are gonna be more complicated then expected...

This is my first Natalensis proper grow, they are beautiful!

This EZD comes from a plate pin. Before that, I had to throw away 5 shoeboxes/EZD of Natalensis overlay nightmares - the kind which want to crawl out of the tub and devour you at night
It is also the first time I got prints, and so managed to close the "grow loop". It's awesome!

It’s so weird how some natalensis have the fuzzy slightly overlay type myc but the fruits look like cubes.

Damn pretty though:

Yield could be better:

Really getting pumped about what kind of trip they produce now that I have enough for a trial.

They are pretty unique if you go for a good dose. I've enjoyed them a lot, just respect the comedown timings as with any other shroom
