Has there been a consensus on the best types of grains to use for nat? From what I learned, it doesn't work well with nutritious grasses like rye, but people have been finding success with grass seed and popcorn.

All grains are nutritious. Grass seed is silly and popcorn is for eating. I reccomend  wheat.

Popcorn is overhated. I've been tempted to try wheat for a while, though.

Over hated? Don't be foolish, the cost is substantially higher for popcorn than feed grains. Further, popcorn occupies much larger volume than many other grains given equal mass. Wheat is dense and fairly easily hydrated. Wheat doesn't have a pesky hull and is tough to overhydrate. I prep nearly 100# dry wheat any given day.

I've got like 6 varieties of popcorn, and they're all for popping.

Just tried hard red winter wheat for the first time and I’m in love

I used popcorn for at least a couple years and after trying other grains, it’s definitely my least favorite.. longer to prep and your inoculate better be spotless.. the starchy excess water that forms in corn jars is a breeding ground for any bit of bacteria.  Larger kernels means less inoculation points.  Better options out there imho

Popcorn is about the same price or a bit cheaper than most grains for me. The really cheap stuff takes too long to ship and have heavy shipping costs if I'm buying >50 lbs. A lot of people mention popcorn's volume, but in the end it fruits just fine. My last popcorn tubs took only a week to colonize at 1:2 bulk. Even from my crappy AA+ isolate I got 4 flushes without dunking. Hydration is a big issue for popcorn, but a 24 hour soak helps a ton. I also have a lower contam rate with it compared to rye and oats, which is probably because popcorn is already pre-sterilized for human consumption.

I've already ordered a bunch of white wheat since I'm running low on popcorn and rye. A lot of hobbyist growers seem like it.

Do you not have animal feed grain available? Feed wheat should be much much much cheaper than popcorn.

Wbs is super cheap, but I don't like how slow it is to colonize. Price is whatever. I just like popcorn because it colonizes super fast.

Popcorn or feed corn is ok. It's bigger than the most common grains, is hard to read for contamination, takes atleast a 45 min boil, and is ultra expensive.

If popcorn was all I had I would most likely still do pf cakes. It's ok just a pita to work with.

Wbs is still the goat ngl.

If I could only get popcorn I think I’d try running it through a coffee bean grinder for a quick pulse or two and break it down a little.

About to get back in the natal game.

Gonna try some overlay this time. Figures as soon as I isolate a good non overlay culture I end up needing overlay.

The corn in wbs is chopped up and it just becomes a sticky mess if you're not careful.

Grinding up popcorn seems like it'd make for a disaster lol... There is way too much starchy liquid in those things. As much as I like popcorn, it's painful to see even a single burst grain in my jars. The grain size really isn't as big of an issue as people make it. Popcorn only takes up 10-15% more volume than grass grains. In return, you're getting 30-50% faster colonization.

However, if wheat can fix my issue of overly wet grains causing bacterial spawn, it just might top all as my favorite.

You can use cracked corn as spawn. I tried it and it was a little messy. I used it in mudda bottles too that helped.

That starchy core can be dried too when it pops.

I am not sure about this yet, but I’ve noticed that the two clones I’ve taken of the very fat Natalensis fruits is a lot more tomentose than the crazy rhizo growth I get from most Natalensis cultures …

I have not fruited these clones yet but I hope I get that fatty pheno!
