Yeah I’m gonna keep it around and see what happens.
Luckily this sweater box has avoided some crazy random accidents and looks to be knotting up.

That big one is sick grim. I wonder how big they can get.
Another thing I noticed that’s different from most cubes is that they’re missing the flaky/scaly look on the stipe that normal cube pins have. That’s one of the things I check to see how far along they are, once it starts stretching and going smooth above the flaky bottom it’s almost done.
These seem be to mostly smooth the whole time. I think I saw the normal look in only one grow here.

It looks like my cling-wrap experiment may have helped with overlay, at least it didn't kill the sub. From what I've experienced both of these nat surfaces are the type that can pin throughout. Its not ideal but I'm not getting as much of the dense, blob type that explode in size and leave no room for a micro-climate. Cant say its a win yet but I'm hopeful. I pulled the cling wrap off when the sub looked like its colonized enough to pin at any moment. These are both 12qt tubs.

Yeah it seems like it fuzzes out when it switches to fruiting. All the spots that looked like knots blew up now.
Day 12

I had it dubbed for like a week but it was getting pretty dry from the ac so I put the lid back on the other day. Maybe that’s got something to do with it cuz that’s when it fuzzed up but I think it’s a coincidence.
Hopefully some pins show up soon.

Fuzz like mine? I thought you meant a crazy layer of myc like grim had.
It’s weird cuz I thought they were knots but now idk.
This stuff does seem really reactive to air. Looking at the side of my tubs the myc gets thicker as it gets closer to the surface. These were found in a field though right? I was thinking maybe they naturally grow at high altitudes and so the fuzz is a response to high oxygen levels or something.
Once I run a couple tubs and get a feel for where the myc is at I’m gonna try a thick late casing too. Like right before it’s gonna pin drop a half inch of coir on it.

I just did a little research and the natal area is also where Durban is. I’m assuming that’s Durban poisons origin.
Anyway it’s just a little coastal province so I’m assuming goes from sea level up to 11,000+ feet. Now I gotta reread the papers on natalensis.
The papers posted on the second page say the first ones were found at 1500m which is pretty high. I’d only skimmed them before but it’s pretty interesting. The bi/tri/quad sporous stuff and saying it could be classed as cyan.

Well idk if this is dirty spawn or the surface getting too dry but now it’s either super puffy or flat and bruised.

Definitely nothing like any cube myc I’ve dealt with.

Funny how close these blobs look to pan jam. I had a pan jam tray I cased a couple Weeks ago with straight Pasteurized vermiculite just to see what it would do. It blobbed over all of it.

I’m with you crack I think ours are the same age. I keep telling it to quit putting energy into fuzzing out and pin already.
My shoeboxes I spawned on the 23rd look better, at least I know they’re clean.

15 days seems to be the magic number for me give or take. Everything I've tried I still haven't figured it out though. Cling wrap on the surface seem to be doing good on some and not so much on others. The thin myc I isolated to jars are so slow it's frustrating. The one good thing I could say about the blob culture is it never contaminates but I have two birth it to my tent to get a good yield.
My mono surface is blobbing hard and I've been picking at it to keep open real estate.
Heres 14 days on a 56 qt mono

Have you tried casing it at this point? I was thinking about putting a layer of coir on one half and jiffy on the other for mine yesterday but I need to run these normal tubs as a baseline first.
Summer growing sucks man. I went to check on my infected tub for the first time in a few days and I cracked the lid and saw a few tiny flies running across the surface so I’m guessing the ooze was from more larvae living in the myc.
Luckily it’s just the one tub.

Sockadin said: Hurry go buy some play sand from the depot and boil and strain it and mix it 30/70 with coir. I can't wait to test this idea! I'm still on plates. Not even to grain yet.
Then do a really light casing and put it back into fruiting. I have a theory about the sand leaching the water from the coir and preventing overlay.
Sock I seen you mention a few times about using sand with these Idk how far apart we are but I'd like to lend my spawn for the experiment I have a quart that should be good to spawn tonight, coir is already prepped and i have a bag of white sand i bought at the pet store. Whats the move? Or ratio should i take?

Late casings had my absolute worst results. It just gave the overlay more media to overlay through. Doubled in size.

Ok so I checked my tubs and have quite a few pins now. Only none on the surface
The oozing fly one has a bunch of nearly mature looking ones and this is my sweater box

The surface on the sweater box is gross. It’s got these water beads that are all kinds of sketchy colors. From yellow to blue to green. But the myc looks white.

Does sand need anything done to it before use? or can i just mix it with my hydrated coir and roll with it? its from the petstore, white sand

I think it would be fine straight from the bag but I know people sterilize it. Just seems like since it’s rock it should be ok, same as verm.
What’d you settle on trying?
