If you see an obvious natalensis pheno (like massive overlay or no veil) but the fruit is also albino or drops rust spores, you can kinda assume you got a successful cross.
Wouldn't rustywhite be a good candidate with both golden spores and leucistic fruits?

I put Rusty whytes and NSS on agar last night. Let's see what will happen. I think RW and NSS grow very differently from each other, so I hope to spot a cross easily. Even the mycelium grows very different in my experience. RW has tomentose mycelium and NSS rhizomorphic mycelium. It's the first time I try to attempt a cross.

I haven't experimented with them just yet, but plan to start a few plates soon since this species is a really piquing my curiosity. I feel like these guys have a ton of potential and really appreciate all of the work everyone has been putting in.
After reading most of this thread and doing a bit of further research elsewhere, there are a couple of things i'd like to mention here since all-in-all, not that much is known or understood about the finer details of their cultivation...
First, i feel like the overlay issue (in conjunction with side-pinning) could be due to certain strains possessing a side-fruiting trait and plan to follow that hypothesis with a few experiments.
Second, I've seen a thread on another forum where Natalensis produced sclerotia on brown rice in mason jars and that hasn't been a finding (or at least a discussed finding) from this group so i thought I'd shed a little light to see if anyone was interested in that characteristic.
That's really all I've got for now. Looking forward to working with you guys on these soon. Blessings.

You have a link to the sclerotia?
I have a feeling it’s probably in vitro overlay or blobbing.

Yeah I’ve had quite a few tubs where the overlay turned into a weird half myc half mushroom flesh kind of thing.

So just to be clear, no one has a trip report from overlay tea or anything? (*ponders rather that's even an attractive idea...)

RW sounds like a sick cross for this. I know I'm a fool but why not go full madness and try to cross it with subtropica or azurenscens I don't understand a lot yet about crossing

And forget the sclerotia, you are missing the obvious
The overlay! This myc is highly active.
I wonder if you can dry it

I’ve dried it but never ate it. It was like a weird styrofoam consistency.
Crossing with cubes might work because they’re very closely related, the other species are way different.

Thought there was someone 5-10 pages back that said they had eaten some of the overlay and it was a very pleasant mild trip. Could be mixing and matching memories though. I’ll try to find it later.

Memory a bit distorted.

I also dried it, the shrinkage is like that of mushrooms. Now I'm waiting for the right moment to brew tea from it.

That's crazy. I'll inoculate brown rice jars tonight cause my other grains are shit so I hope I can get some natalensis sclerotia too. Don't think it really has to do with the grain though.
