Q1: Do you think I should choose the densest spot that doesn't have aerial mycelium over it? Or just choose from the border and try very hard to take from the lower layer only?

Q2: Can I realistically get ten sets of genetics if I make ten transfers? Or will most be duplicates? (I see different patches of mycelium, but fewer than ten.)

Lookin good! I'd take transfers from 8-4 on the bottom culture; don't worry about the aerial my. Each time you transfer you narrow down the genetics, however from my understanding it's very difficult to isolate genetics down to a monoculture. And you don't really want to do that before spawning anyways, because you might isolate a poor fruiting/weak culture that way. Put them on grain as soon as it's clean then clone a good fruit to narrow down on good genetics

Do these have a grain preference? I just bought 100 lbs of millet so it's between oats and millet.

I don't think so. Any grain should do well.

:takingnotes: I've never had a failed batch of oats and I've gone through about 600 pounds of 'em -- I'll try oats first round.

I have germination as of this morning. I didn't take any pics but I will when it grows out some. I will take some transfers to T1 and if clean, go to grain from there.

I only say “fuck oats” because the prep sucks and the two times I ran them they were so bacterial I couldn’t even get a beggar’s grow going. Limited experience with em but it’ll stay that way because crack’s no prep millet gives everyone zero reason to do anything else if they value time

Nice. I thought germination was rather quick. Usually don't see germination quite that fast unless the spores are really fresh.

Rn I am using RGS for spawn. It can be prepped just like crack's no prep millet.

They stick like crazy if you do it that way. They clump at the bottom and I once had to hit a jar so hard it broke, on rubber no less. They stick to the glass and lid so some won't colonize. The bottom grains burst. And the mycelia will always look a little bit off, not like the pictures you see online. IMO. Millet has problems, but I'm sure you will see some benefits as well.

Oats are grains, can you be more specific? Looks like maybe Rye Berries you got there.
