My spores originated from a vendor here in SA that has them listed as P.cubensis var - NatalSuperStrength(NSS)
While a google search has some people listing/posting them as P.natalensis.
I believe the original collection (of these spores)possibly came from a collection in the Hillcrest area of Natal-
And NOT from the Gartz,Reid,Smith and Eicker collection which was more inland towards the Drakensburg(also in Natal ,South Africa)
I cannot however 100% verify all of this.
P.cubensis (and Panaeolus cyanescens)are found all along the warmer Eastern side of our county where cows and horses are around.(P. cubensis var Transkei being the other more well known cube variety from SA.)

Id love to see side by side test results of samples from both species-collected in different areas here in SA-and see what the results have to say.
More than likely-genetically they are more or less all the same BUT that slight VARIATIONS(phenotypes) of them would occour in them from different factors in different regional areas(colour, size.strength ect...)but also day/night temps, altitude, humidity, soil compositions, grasses ect
Much the same like different regional varieties of cannabis but also no different to humans ,animals, birds, plants ect..
But hey...
I very may well be wrong...
Im always open to what those more in the know have to say and always ready to learn some more.

Growth is usually very fast and rhizo on these & while Ive never experienced growth  on a tub like yours-just leave them be..this variety is pretty much bullet proof and Im pretty sure youll still get some nice fruits...

My heres my first attempt at running these in a tub of straw (uncovered outdoors)...
Kinda messed up and forgot about it so  the surface on it had completly dried up & when I looked again it had these side pins coming on the sides.
Carefully tipped out block
Let the fruits mature and have popped it back into tub and will hopefully do a better job at maintaining good surface conditions for second flush

Sorry for the crappy//grainy pics
Camera bust
Had to borrow one to snap these from this outdoor patch on straw/manure
And trust
These pics dont do them justice
The colours on the caps of these are insanely beautiful
Almost golden yellow & all thickkk and meaty-unlike the thinner taller fruits with smaller caps seen when grown indoors in tubs

It varies alot according to region
Here on the eastern side where I stay its stays pretty warm
Lows in winter average about 14
Highs in summer 30
With high humidity
Of course these are averages and the odd day can be less or more but inland a hour or two weather is way different
Freezing//snow on mountain ranges in winter
//high temps in summer with heavy storms...
Were coming into spring now so temps are slowly warming again but there is still snow on mountains inland at the moment and temps in the morning have been a little low.

Wow
Interesting twist on this one...
I must say this thread has all the makings of a soap opera...

Now
Will the REAL natalensis please stand  up....

I myself am looking foward to seeing some more solid info that 100% seperates these two varieties

Looks like you gonna have some fatties there Psilo...I've found when I run them outdoors on straw/manure they like to stay short and wide...

Was going thru some of my dishes and found this one with a family of pins that looks promising...

So guys ...
Weather's been great for mushrooms recently so I've been out and about searching

Here you go...
Some freshly picked Psilocybe cubensis "Natal"//Natalensis??(unsure of which one but whichever floats ur boat)straight out the fields....

Check the long stem and small cap on fruit  (far right first pic) and the green/blue bruising

Here was a solitary (almost white)fruit coming up straight out the grass-no dung visible

Season is only getting started
I'll hopefully post up some more detailed pics soon.

The ones I've personally collected all along the coast (from Durban to Transkei) have always look like these.
I've never had the opportunity to search around the Midlands area but would love to see pics of specimens collected from there.
As I said right at the beginning of the thread I'd love to see the results of side by side testing/sequencing  of all the different actives(pans and cubes mainly but there are others)found round South Africa and see what science has to say...that it is infact genetic difference or...are we just seeing various phenotypes being expressed due to environmental factors...

Started a couple plates from spore a while back

Fruits are plenty but so noodle ish
Some with veils and some without all in the same bag...

And look what I found in a bag of my manure collected at the farm where I've seen //collected this variety from before...

Thanks guys...
Nothing special at all with my test bags
Just standard coir&verm mix
They do love manure thou as the ones in the manure bag show..
Maybe they grow so nice here cause they are basically @home??

Psilo
Until someone can show me conclusive evidence that shows likewise
I think that Natalensis/Nss are one and the same thing....but that's just my outlook and I could very well be wrong

Couple more testers

Some decent sized fruits but got some crazy business going in in both that I've never personally had before
Split deformed stems bent over

Maybe my sub was a drop or two on the wet side or just possibly some bacterial issue??
