Proper Lid Tek?

I am looking for an updated proper lid tek. I am using Polyfil currently and had some contamination around 10%. Wondering if I could get that down a few percent using Tyvek, Micropore/Autoclave tape, or SFD? I picked up some Tyvek envelopes from the local post office and was thinking of trying that.

Most of those you mentioned are a downgrade from polyfil and your contamination isn't coming from your filters. Sfds are pretty great but the others you mentioned suck imo. Polyfil makes a good filter.

You're trying to fix something that isn't the cause of the problem. Unless you made your polyfil lids completely wrong they work just as well as any other lid at keeping contamination out

You can use synthetic filter disks cut into nickel size pieces in place of your polyfil if you already have holes. You would glue them on with high temperature silicone you can get at an automotive store.
I do mine like this. Each sfd can make about 20 plus.

Some people donβt like the small cut pieces and prefer one sfd per lid. Out of thousands of jars cooked over 10 years Iβve had maybe two come off.

I'm sure poly is very effective but its ugly as fuck..I use SFDs personally and they work great can wash and reuse them too...
While we are on the subject, why is micropore tape fine for pastyplates but not grains?

Anyway I can refrain from using poly is a win! Stuff is messy. Good point. Sfd lidβs are clean, easy to use, easy to clean(just rinse).
Hell I donβt even pc with foil over my lids, just as is and the filters donβt even get soggy. Polyfil gets very wet.

Everything gets wet in a pressure cooker. I don't use foil over the lids of any kind of grain jar including polyfil. I stopped that like 2-3 years ago. The foil is pointless

I prefer sfd but they literally work exactly the same.

A piece of tyvek suit taped down with two layers of micropore tape works quite well.

Ime plastic lids arent consistent enough for me. They warp if ya havent heard. Really not worth the investment, I'm switching back to the standard lids. I understand your frustration with the polyfil. Its just time consuming task for a simple goal. Mp tape is the solution for that, it's cheap too. I plan on using the standard self-sealing lids with mp tape from here on out (as long as the adhere to the smooth coating during the pc cycle)
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6870950 Good read on the plastic vs standard lids. Very insightful

I know this is probably considered wrong and micropore tape isnt supposed to allow for air exchange, but I dont even use a lid. I put aluminum foil over top, secure with autoclave tape. Poke hole in middle and cover with micropore tape. Then individually bag each jar in ziplocs with hole covered in microtape straight from SAB. It takes about 3 weeks to colonize from lc ( much longer than what others report) but my spawn rarely gets contaminated this way.

I wanted to thank everyone for the response. I did go syringe to grain jar because I wanted to use up the syringe after inoculating my agar plates. The Polyfil looks just ugly but only seeing 1 jar out of ten go bad I guess is good for syringe. I want to try SFD but cant seem to find a good source for them. Also I cannot find a good source for case of plates. Anyone know where I can find SFD's and bulk plates based on a good experience?

Doesn't get easier than this I run both unmodded and sfd lids Every now and again an sfd pops off and then I just toss the lid and sfd in the trash and grab another unmodded lid

I dont know anything about that brand but I just ordered a case of smaller 60mm dishes for $78 off amazon. Celltreat brand so they are high quality. I'd look around a little more before ordering those I've found cases as low as $58 on ebay, random brands though.

It will work for grains , if it didn't allow gas exchange it would create a vacuum
