Cantharellus or Omphalotus ... to eat or die
    #26413414 - 01/02/20 10:37 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Habitat:  Santa Cruz Mnts, very close to Santa Cruz where mountain biking and banana slugs rule.  Growing directly out of decaying oak.... or redwood?... alongside a trail.

Cap: at least 10cm ... a big boy.

Spore print:  I couldn't pick it - other trail walkers need to see this!

I imagined myself having a pleasant spot of tea after consuming this beauty.  But my best guess is that I would have ended up vomiting.  Thoughts or comments?  Note cluster species growing around it (last pic) - mushroom, anyone?

Definitely not Chanterelle.  Chants don't grow off of wood and they have false gills, plus the color is way off.

Not Chanterelles for sure.

Those last ones look like Hypholoma

Disclaimer - I'm just a hobbyist and cannot absolutely guarantee any ID offered. I'm most familiar with the species found in the Pacific Northwest - those found in other parts of the world may vary considerably, so always do your own research to find out what grows in your area and what lookalikes you need to be aware of. Understand that many mushroom species cannot be 100% reliably identified by photographs alone, even by an expert, so it may not be possible to go beyond suggesting a probable genus.

Ah, H. capnoides, or Conifer tuft, I was thinking that. Spore print of dark purplish brown supports that.

And looks like I assumed right that I shouldn't harvest the big guy.

Thanks!
