My family has lived here for almost a hundred years. I'm not going to even get into the California genocide right fucking now but, fire happens.
Suppression of it is the problem.

You know what the people that decide our laws do it over drinks.
And your going to discount what I say based on the fact I "might" be drunk?

I guess it's slightly funny how common it is for people that have no understanding of the situation to rattle off all the 'you should or should've' solutions.
Less controlled burning was carried out the last few years, because the window of suitable days was much shorter.
Areas where controlled burns were done this year still burnt due to the extreme conditions and intensity of the fires fanned by verry strong winds.
We've had a multi-year drought in the eastern half of the country. Shit is dry af.
Areas of peat swamp in the subtropical rainforests of Tasmania burnt last year that were previously thought to be unburnable. Same with the peat in the Alpine regions of Victoria that burnt last week.
You cannot stop fires like the ones we have right now and will likely have over the coming months and years. We all fucked up and it's too late.

I don't think anyone except that one newbie was saying otherwise mate. We were just discussing how we got here at all, some people don't want to blame climate change at all and some people want to completely blame climate change.
When the world is literally on fire, pointing fingers is pretty useless. I'm really sorry this is happening to you and the people you love, I just hope the world pulls together and helps you as much as they can

Completely open to being wrong but did I read that a large portion of the fires in Australia were actually caused by arsonists? I won't lie, the extremists on both ends of the spectrum keep me away from all the media upkeep regarding it.

I was kinda talking about that guy, but it was a general observation, not necessarily directed at this thread.

~1% of fires were arson. The rest were dry lightning, trees falling on powerlines and stupid fucks using angle grinders.

For people who have a better handle on the layout of the land and the direction/location of the fires, have there been any estimates on how long these fires will go and what amount of land will be burnt by the time they go out? Are we like 50% done, or 75% through this? You know what I’m saying?

Almost impossible to answer.
A lot of Australia is effectively not able to burn due to the fact its desert.
I'd GUESS that less than 1 percent of the total mainland has caught on fire... but as a proportion of areas that are able to be burnt itd be higher.
We have populated the coastal fringes which are cooler and greener than inland. This is what has triggered all the angst ..these fringes are close to our cities and its these fringes that are on fire.
Large swathes of "untouched" national parks have burnt out and effectively run out of fuel..for now.
An large island near me has lost almost 50 percent of its entire area to fire.
We are still in the very beggining ot this years "fire season" with still many areas which have the potential to burn. Also the risk of flare ups from the continuing fires.
It wont be over in my lifetime....its only getting worse. Who knows what next year brings.

I will let Australia burn, but I need to get some of those aborigines on my side so we can get to work. Maybe a rain dance and some love will bring about that...

Rupert Murdoch owned media has consistently exaggerated the role of arson in Australia fires
