Australia is burning. * 6
    #26413552 - 01/03/20 01:37 AM (4 years, 26 days ago)

Well the nonexistence of climate change indicates that every year being hotter and drier and windier has finally set us poor bastards on fire. It's some serious burning happening, whole towns are being razed and all we can do is run for our lives. Normally at this time of year all the subtropical rainforest would be soaking wet, now it's visible from space as a cloud of smoke.
After more than 2 months of solid burning it's becoming critical now. The firefighters are exhausted and being caught off guard and being killed. Today it was announced to deploy major military mobilization to try and help save people who are trapped and back up the firefighters on the ground. The military have been involved since the start, but they're pulling out all the stops now. More than 12 million acres have burned and there is no sign of it stopping any time soon. We're so fucked down here. So fucked. We're truly at the mercy of the elements.

I don't really know how to wrap this post up. Spare a thought for your antipodean cousins. When faced with a wall of fire all other concerns are trivial.

Oh shit man. Sorry to hear that

Are you personally in trouble? Or are these fires far from your location?

Im a definite climate change believer. Theres too much dramatic change in the world to not consider it.

Poor Australians. Your in my prayers.

I live in the far north east so my home isn't at threat. I have friends and family who are in the way though, if it doesn't stop they will be stripped of everything.

I'm down in NSW right now visiting my Dad. The closest fire is 60km away, but currently unstoppable.

Mine certainly go out to all there, for that country is dear to my heart like no other.

Coupled with that, I literally have an antipodean cousin who runs the family farm out there. They're talking about selling up next year cause the droughts are so bad. When I lived there in 2017 they were running ~500 cattle and ~1500 sheep. They now don't think they can run more than 50/250 due to lack of water and pasture. They can't afford to keep running the business at those numbers.

*POOF*.. there goes my dream of heading out there this year and settling in.

This is the view of the smoke/fires from the shearing shed where I spent so much time that summer:

And all those areas in black are burned or burning:

And this is what all the dams are looking like now:

It truly is an epic clusterfuck, and I dearly hope it gets better there soon.

And for those that aren't aware, bushfires in Australia are so devastating because of all the oil in the eucalyptus trees that dominate a lot of the landscape out there. I hear they don't so much 'catch fire' as 'explode' when that oil gets up to temperature...

Isn't there aqua layer below the surface? So all those farms in the outback could get water?

If there was, they'd have found a way to effectively get it up by now, believe me.

That's some scary images JSB. You should see the nightly news, it's real horror show on the ground.

I live in the jungle. It's not unheard of for us to get 8m of rain in a year, 4m is pretty standard. Great for crocodiles, mozzies and fishing. Not really fire country.

I saw somewhere that 500 million or so animals in the area have died.

500. Million.

That's just absolutely insane.

What the hell is going on there??

There's so many videos online though with a quick search. It's mostly pretty awful stuff though and not really good food for thought.

Today everyone along a 260km stretch of coast has been told to leave, today.

The Navy are plucking people off the beaches as they have no other way out and there's too many for helicopters to rescue.

I remember reading an article in the Melbourne paper when I was there in 2005 talking about how the lack of water will be the greatest crisis Australia would face in the next 50 years.

Certainly seems they were right. Amazing how these climate predictions come true so often but the other side thinks they get it wrong.
