Aloha, sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot. This is a question for those experienced in identifying fungi. What did you read or do to get good at identifying mushrooms? Do you know when you see it, or do you have a guide with pictures you are looking at when the information about the unknown species comes in?
I appreciate any answers I like hunting and have read a couple guides that weren't mine but I have no idea what 90% of it is. I know 4 mushrooms that grow in my area but I find weird stuff and have no idea. I wish I had a better knowledge on what characteristics identify a specific genus or a certain species

I started getting into it last year when I moved to the upper peninsula of Michigan and found giant pored mushrooms in the forest behind my house. I looked up what to call the anatomy/parts of the mushroom, then typed shit like 'big brown mushroom, pale pores" into an online search engine. (any online search engine should work)
When I found something that looked similar, I looked up the key identification features, then all potential look alikes. (Turned out to be king bolete!) You may be inclined to obtain consent from your spouse before partaking of your fist self-made identification. Study up and good luck!

Also, michaul kuos website is pretty thorough on genome identification.

Ok so most people are using a guide and not characteristics to define the genus and species

The characteristics are what the guide tells you to look for. There are some fairly general features that you use to get to the genus. In each genus there is a different set of features to look at to get to the species, with each genus having their own different set from the others.
Start by learning the common genera you find. When you can ID them to the correct genus, then you can start learning the features for that genus to start IDing to species.

I agree with ToxicMan, the way I learned was by getting out and learning to identify the species that were growing in my yard, plus I read as much as possible.
Sites such as: www.shroomery,org www.mushroomobserver.org www.Inaturalist.org www.mushroomexpert.com
They are all great places to see what is being found in your area with great people that will be happy to help you learn.
A little "saying" or mantra I use when picking mushrooms for consumption that has helped me over the years. "If in doubt, throw them out". If at any time I have doubts about a mushroom it goes in the compost pile, I don't care how sure I was about it before, if I have the tiniest doubt I don't risk it.
Have fun, enjoy being out in nature and don't get discouraged. Post your observations and wait for a Trusted identifier to identify your observations before consuming any mushrooms. Hope this helps.
Edit: the mushroomexpert link is an excellent resource, it has identification keys and much more. Familiarize yourself with the keys and accept that you won't be able to identify everything that you find and you will be okay. A microscope is needed to identify a lot of mushrooms to species level, but don't worry about it right now, focus on learning to get to Genus 1st and then go to the next level.
