Peppermint Oil Casing Layer / Misting - 12/23 Grow Log - GT
    #26413279 - 01/02/20 09:04 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

When taking the tape off of some of my tubs I noticed a small bug. Kinda like a mosquito. Definitely a leaf/water type.
Does peppermint oil really work as a repellent?
Can I add peppermint oil to my coir I plan on using for a casing layer?
Should I put some Diatomaceous Earth to use? How?
Note:
I live in a seasonally wet/dry climate.
Extremely dry as it is winter. Only bugs can come from inside. Can eggs lay in coir?

How did you prepare the coir? I dont see a bug egg surviving in coir that had boiling water poured on it. It had to sneak in some other way
could also try the good ol cut a water bottle in half cut a cross in the lid then seal it with some tape on the edges to a jar with some apple cider vinegar inside. Lotsa bugs crawl down like a funnel then fall in and drown

How big was it? Fungus gnat perhaps? Have any potted plants in the house?

Very small, smaller than a dime. No house plants, unless one of my roommates has one unbeknown to me.

Recycle fruiting blocks and spent active substrate for gourmets... have recycled sawdust up to 6 times before it lost its ability to hold moisture or form lol

I do the exact same thing.  Didn't set out to, but after I used up a couple of the spray bottles I had around the house for other projects, I decided to swipe one of the tiny, colored spray bottles from my wife's stash.  She had one she was using with water and pepermint oil for pest control.  I rinsed it but couldn't get the smell out, so I used it anyway (still smeled very potent).  We got an insane fungal gnat infestation via the attatched conservatory, and I was worried to say the least about starting to cultivate again given the inevitability of their enjoying my cakes/sub.  Lightbulb went off: I used the water in there to begin with on a whim, and had zero problems.  From them on I added a tiny drop of peppermint oil every couple times I refilled it.  I haven't seen any manner of insect inthe room I grow in since.  I add a tiny drop in a 20oz spray bottle for my cannabis plants which I use as a foliar spray periodically with a few other control-focused inigredients.  Smells great too.  Crazy coincidence...

Bro wth is a conservatory? Is this something to do with dead bodies?

I'm gonna assume if I use no harm no foul?

Take away. In case you were wondering at all. Peppermint oil is bad news bears for you grow.

Would it be safe to assume a casing layer would end in a similar result? Asking cause I added it to my coir on a hunch and will junk it if need be. Going to try it out in 8 hours when I get back home unless advised not to.

The odds of the 178 ppl that have seen this thread having experience with adding peppermint oil to our casing layers are maybe below .09% and if you wanted a direct answer from those you know have had experience, there’s a private message function.

Simply stated, adding essential oils to combat bug problems isn’t common practice and doing it after finding evidence against it, is just a bad judgment call on your part.  We just don’t have experience with it, Hence the no responses.. we don’t all check every post that’s posted.

I didn’t delete your thread, I closed it, there’s a difference because your links were left up, but as you said, live and learn.  Can you imagine if everyone made a second or third or fourth thread because they didn’t get a (in their mind) timely response to their questions?  The site would be so gummed up that no one would be able to make heads or tails of the forums

In the future, you’ll get a better response if you put all your tubs you’re growing at the same time in one post (you can edit your post with updates)... name it something like “highharles end of year grows” or something like that... that way we don’t have to keep track of 6 different threads and you’ll have ppl easily following what you’re getting done... because, We do want to help you and we do want to follow what you’re doing but if you make it difficult, well.. we don’t get paid to help you... it’s a labor of love, but if you make it hard, there’s a hundred other ppl making it easier.

But to give a possible fix to your problem, maybe you don’t have to add it to your casing material itself.. maybe just try wetting a piece of paper towel with peppermint oil and and folding it up and taping it to the inside of your bin.. that could be a way to keep the bugs at bay without making contact with your substrate

And whether you like this response or not, please report back what your experience with the peppermint oil was because that’s how we all move forward in this community.

I'll keep you updated on whether or not itll affect myc growth in any way. I only used it on 2 tubs, didnt throw an excessive amount on, so there shouldn't be much damage. All for contributing to the archives. Thanks much

Edit:
I added it before asking sooooo....

There was evidence supporting both sides to the use of peppermint oil. What if statements provoke more thought and can be extremely useful.

I've only directly messaged someone when I had my bed cakes rolling for the first time(turned out like shit regardless) n felt like that annoying 4 year old who always asks why for even the smallest of actions. I dont wanna be another bug in the ear.

This may be off topic (more suitable in another thread) but in regards to "we dont get paid". Can I add a yet? With denver decriminalizing the use/possession of mushrooms do you think the state will follow suit? You always here people going to shops and asking for them but they dont have them cause they're not 100% legal. There is a demand, it's a tourist state, I dont see why they wouldnt be the first to legalize for recreation.
Imo we've been headed for a pre-Nixon era. Ending the drug war. Getting more in tune with our connection to spirit due to the chaotic nature of our world. Modern 70s might be around the corner????

Well theres no metabolites after day one with peppermint. The myc actually seems to be consuming it at a normal rate

Tubs one and two
12/23 12/25
Day 6 going on 7 with peppermint oil casing. Misting with peppermint oil.
After using peppermint oil it will linger. Bleach and vinegar might take it out buuuuut if it doesn't seem to hurt why would you?

If ya got any observations that bring the sub into question, lemme know, thanks all

More misting?

I'll attach pictures in a few hours (tomorrow my bad)

I was gone for a couple days, took off a layer of mp tape to increase fae. I came to the conclusion my substrate was above field capacity when spawning. Added the MP after the 2 days (day 3).
Today's day 4 from coming to that conclusion. I also found out the wall my shelfs are on is cold. Creating condensation on the back side of the tubs. I rotated them and turned my air purifier on for an hour to take some of it away. I plan on taking the shelf/rack a few inches away from the wall to ensure I'm not preventing any fae.
My first two tubs havent started pinning quite yet but look like theyll be developing some decent clusters. Other tubs (all scented with peppermint oil higher concentration in the first two with direct mix) have started pinning. At least 3 of them. It makes me curious why the later ones have started pinning earlier? I used the healthiest looking spawn for the first few tubs. I plan on chunking my threads all together soon as well. Shit sucks one a phone or a tablet. Need a lap/desktop. The fruits that are coming through look like some chubby fuckers. Excited they're not wimpy looking goldens, just gonna be a question of abundance.
The casing layer has been colonizing. Hopefully not mistaking it for a contam lmao. It looks healthy to me

Here are the pics, I just misted. I tried uploading pics of a birds eye view but it didnt upload n I'm busy. So ya got side shots.

Peppermint oil casing layer seems to be safe, I left the grains exposed for about 7-10 days before adding
