Some kind of Gym?
    #26412774 - 01/02/20 03:26 PM (4 years, 27 days ago)

-Habitat: Growing off a rotting pine tree in damp woods.

-Gills:
Yellow (Rusty orange from spores)

-Spore print color:
Rusty orange

-Smell: Not mushroomy; very similar to the g. junonius I found a couple weeks ago.

-Taste: Bitter and dry.

I thought they were galerinas or omphalotus from a distance, but upon closer inspection, I don't think so.

I'm guessing they're something like g. sapineus. Or maybe I'm totally off. They for sure have that unique gymn smell though. (Do all gymn species have a similar smell?)

It’s definitely a Gymnopilus. Hard to be more specific without knowing more and without some microscopy. What region of the country?

I believe that is a sapineus unfortunately inactive.

I know the activity of certain Gymnopilus has been disputed and I’ve even heard region plays a part in that within the same species. I’ve had a patch of Gymnopilus that year after year comes back and in the spring they don’t bruise green, every fall though they readily bruise green.
Now that you know where it is, you should check it seasonally and see if they ever demonstrate bruising. But then again, bruising or lack of, isn’t always a definitive trait. Gymns are often an interesting mystery.

Yes, something like G. sapineus /penetrans /picreus, whichever of them is most commonly found in your area.
