saran wrap roll cut with bandsaw...how?
    #26412560 - 01/02/20 01:42 PM (4 years, 27 days ago)

Years ago I cut a saran wrap roll into inch wide pieces of tape with my bandsaw. I just did it again and the rolls won't unfurl easily. What do you think was different? I may have gone too slow this time and melted the plastic? Or the wrap was thinner this time...

How should I do it next time?

: the group solved it.... get an extremely sharp kitchen knife and put a bunch of downward force on it. I used a wooden spoon to help push it down. I bet my knife could be sharper too.

or a PVC pipe cutter works great.

Maybe a different brand.

I would also cut it in the box (remove the metal piece first)

I do it on the bandsaw. Going slow is definitely the wrong way to do it, as it melts the edges together and it wont unroll. It’s been hit or miss for me honestly, so I’ve actually resorted back to doing it with a utility knife. I wish my band saw had a lower speed pulley, it would probably be a breeze if it did.

Seems like an overly complicated solution.  If you have a bandsaw, I would suspect you have a utility knife.  Use that... it’s easy.

If you’ve ever used a band saw you’d know how much easier it is than doing it with a utility knife, asides from the melting issue. I still cut coir blocks up on the band saw. I should try it in my metal bandsaw actually, it’s much slower than my wood saw.

I use a large sharp kitchen knife, apply enough force and it will just slice through like a cake

Okay, I'll try a sharp kitchen knife, then back to the saw, and I'll go fast to avoid melting.

Update: going faster with the bandsaw (cutting with in the saran box) did not help.

I have a very sharp kitchen knife and It took all my might to slice through, perhaps I am not mighty enough.

Wished I could get the bandsaw to work.... done in 20 seconds...

It worked before!!!

It definitely varies for different types of wrap for me. I have no idea which are best though.

This.
Years ago saran wrap was made of good plastic that cut well, stretched well, clung well, and wasnt all staticy.
Now its polyethylene garbage that melts, doesnt stretch, and clings to things you dont want it to.
They changed the formulation because in some places trash is burned, and apparently smoking the old saran wrap was unhealthy.

If the cut surface has melted you can use a sharp knife to cut off a band of the melted zone deep enough to wrap a few dozen petris before doing it again.

Thanks Auxin!

I resharpened my knife so it easily sliced the edge of paper...

And used a wooden spoon to press down on the knife back...

And focused my mental energy on splitting the roll, and boom, sliced. Not easy, but sliced.

Brand used... Essential Everyday. Its thinner than my last roll bought years ago, and doesn't cling as well.... but it works.

If your knife is as sharp as it should be it's really not too hard to get through a roll in one go.

Definitely a better use of your time vs. using a bandsaw and trying to figure out how to not melt it.

I just timed it (I needed a new 1" roll of anyway), it took 11 seconds to slice off a 1" roll of Glad ClingWrap with a less than sharp blade.  Voila!  A 400' spool and not melted.

98% of every knife in a home that wasn't my own home has been horribly dull. Most people's sharpest kitchen knife isn't really that sharp at all. You should easily be able to shave your arm hair off with your kitchen knives. Easily be able to cut a piece of Kleenex in half. Cut a tomato without denting the skin at all and now sawing motion.

Haha... just ran into this yesterday.  10" thick log at g/f's house that needed to be chopped through with a hatchet she had.  Was so dull it was no different than beating it with a hammer.  I'm not even sure how you get a hatchet that dull unless someone was using it to try and cut a boulder in half.

New utility blades are really sharp, but they are only like an inch long.

I do need to sharpen my kitchen knives though. Our really nice set has gotten pretty beat up over the last year or so.
