Inventions that you thought were your ideas? * 1
    #26412355 - 01/02/20 11:19 AM (4 years, 27 days ago)

I was just thinking about this earlier. And how much money I could possibly have if I went through with trying to do something with other ideas of mine.

Automatic spaghetti-twirling fork
bug-a-salt
MSH tooth regenerating gel for cavities

All these things have made a good amount of money. If you are pretty sure your ideas will sell and you have the means to patent and sell it, go for it.

In the 1980's I worked an hour or so on a chord progression on guitar, went to bed thinking I had something. Next day I started playing it and thought, that music's almost exactly the verse of that Rod Stewart song 'I was only joking'. lol At least my chorus was different.
In 1975 the teacher asked us to draw the water cycle, as class clown I drew a paddlewheel jetski before it was really a thing. The teacher stood over me, studied the drawing and said ''that's a good idea'' and made me draw the evap/rain thing. She kept my drawing.

That’s not how inventing works. Unless you have the money to develop, test, manufacture and market an invention yourself, you won’t see much return from an invention. Sorry. Venture capital is where the money is in the invention game

I'm the main author of a product that's been patented that I invented and produce. I've received thousands of dollars in royalties. My company (the one I am employed at) owns the patent though.

I wanted to build a tooth brush with a strain gauge handle that beeps a low sound when too little pressure is applied and high when too much pressure is applied. But after some research it's already been done and then sued out of existence by Gig Toothbrush over patent infringement. That's not a joke, Oral B has a long history of very predatory patent litigation.

Concepts are not patentable. Patents apply to designs or processes. You could design an automatic spaghetti fork and patent it, but someone else could just change something about the way it works, like adding a gear or switching mechanism and they aren’t violating your patent.

I dated a girl who's dad worked for Moog. He had patent plaques around his house of his inventions that he designed, car part stuff we all use.
I asked if he got royalty $$$ for the work.
He laughed and said ''I got my paycheck that week but that's it''.

My father had over 100 patents. He had a device just approved last year by the FDA five years after his death, and 15 years after the process of getting approval started. He invented a product in the 1970s that his employer sold years later for hundreds of millions of dollars. Something so ubiquitous you probably use some form of it everyday. Our family is not set for life. It’s simply a fantasy that you can invent something and become rich. The invention is by far the easiest part.

You have the inventor and the venture capitalists (either investors or an employer). If the inventor is not the venture capitalist, then the inventor won’t be getting super rich. Probably the easiest route for a good invention is to sell your patent to a company who wishes to develop it.

There was a house in Illinois in the early 1980's called 'Pot-In-The-Box' that was a drive thru window 24 hour pot shop. A secluded, well lit rural home that urban legend said sold weed confiscated by police, who were well known for being corrupt. The police chief also owned the huge 24 hour stripclub and the 24 hour nightclub 5 minutes from Pot-In-The-Box.
They pulled you over after you partied at their bar and then took your stuff and sold it.
Genius really.

I had the concept of an iPhone pretty much nailed down after iPods came up.

I mean I'm sure other people had the same idea, but I legit thought out all the things you could do with a phone,mp3 player and camera combination and I even had some concept of the Apple play store.

I wish I wrote down my thoughts about it so I could go back and look at it today.

Simply getting something patented is unbelievably time consuming and expensive.

I just looked on Justia. My dad has a half dozen patents approved since he died. Most recent one was in 2019, six years after he died. For some reason my mother is also on the patent 🤔

Long story short, I created a safety product that’s used for concrete breaking activities. It’s been a bit of a disappointment as far as sales, but that’s mostly due to a lack of regulatory pressure. I’ve still done pretty well, no complaints, despite not owning the patent or the company that sells it.

What type of motors/machines are you into??

I just found out that most of the modern motors used in drones are actually three phase ac. The electronics create three AC sine waves from the battery. I guess they are more reliable and have variable speed without losing torque.

That's my current crop but I've a long and rich history of vehicles that are fast in every way possible. Way too much to list. The last one has a fully built race engine going in next week. 190hp!!!!

You're more into four wheels over two right?

I just found out that most of the modern motors used in drones are actually three phase ac. The electronics create three AC sine waves from the battery. I guess they are more reliable and have variable speed without losing torque.

Do you have an example? Converting from DC battery to AC would be pretty wasteful.

I own all two strokes. Both on road and off. I even have one two stroke race car. None of it is very fast in modern terms, but it’s all pretty fun. The only four strokes I own are my lawn mower and my diesel car.

I think they’re technically DC since the primary current direction never changes. The effect is the same since induced current flow depends on change in flux not current direction. They use a sinusoidal waveform though, cheaper ones mimic it with pulse width modulation.

Are you talking about VFD controlled motors where they change the input frequency to control motor speed? I don't know if drones use this, I would think not since they are DC, but a lot of equipment uses DC 3phase motors with AC supply. The VFD converts the AC to 3 phase DC.

I don't know exactly how electronic speed controls work in RC vehicles, I think they manage switching speed of transistors but I am not really versed in this area. I know they are solid state these days, they used to use a servo and a rheostat, which is a terrible way to control electric motor speed.

Drone motors are controlled with a chip called the electronic speed control. It’s all very confusing

It's complicated, but we know the batteries are DC, we know they use brushless DC motors. So with switching transistors in the ESC (note I used the non abbreviated term in my previous posts) they manage the speed of their motors. I don't think they use AC as you proposed, but I'm not an electrical engineer so I could very well be wrong.

When it comes to induction, the direction of the primary current is irrelevant. The waveform is what matters. If you input a DC sine wave into a primary coil that goes from 0 to 100 volts, the induced current will be exactly the same as if you input an AC sine wave that went from -50 to 50. When the primary current is growing, the induced current flows in one direction and when the primary current is falling, the induced current flows the opposite direction, all with a 90° phase shift. Induction motors take advantage of the fact that the primary electromagnet is 90° out of phase with the induced magnet.

idk how many times seeing something and be like hey that's my idea!

-giant human size hamster ball
-floating air-pump and long air-hose for diving without tanks
-solar panel connected to headphones to hear the light waves..
and sound transmitted by flashlight battery connected in-line with audio-out.
-portable audio amp and speaker you can plug into headphone jack

almost seems like collective unconscious thing..
have an idea, can bet someone else already did.
