1st I want to say that Alan Rockefeller is one of the best when it comes to identification of gilled mushrooms from pictures alone.

However,  identification of mushrooms through pictures is extremely difficult and mistakes will happen, even professional mycologist will make mistakes when identifying mushrooms from pictures with limited information. I had a disclaimer about this in my signature for a long time because it is ultimately up to you to be sure that you are receiving an accurate identification.  We have the Trusted Identifier tag because we have demonstrated an ability to accurately identify fungi, it's not something that is just given to anyone, but it doesn't mean that we are perfect and don't make mistakes. This is a great example of why having to much confidence in someone can be a problem and why we must take responsibility for ourselves and be sure that you are receiving accurate information.

If I have something that I want to eat and I am not certain, I will post it on a few different sites to make sure that everyone is saying the same thing, but if at any time I have any doubts whatsoever I will throw them out, no matter what anyone else says or how sure I was when it was picked.

It is very important to post clear up close pictures of the cap, gills and stem,  without all 3 mistakes will happen. Even with all 3 mistakes can happen because we are human. Identification of mushrooms with them in your hand is easy to miss important characteristics, many experienced foragers have made mistakes simply because they glanced at something and they thought they recognized it.

Don't let this shake your confidence in Trusted identifiers, but do keep in mind that we are human and will occasionally make a mistake and you must be sure that we are correct before eating anything.

:whathesaid:

Misidentifications happen all the time, sometimes even with the most skilled identifiers.

It all boils down to the available amount of relevant data. Pictures are of course crucial
for identification, but then it's also up to the photographer to know what to look for when
taking the pictures.

Definitely true, close ups of each part of the mushroom make it easier for anyone trying to ID. Often people photograph more of a wide shot of their mushrooms and it can be kind of hard to tell specific features that way. I also find that when I post on identification forums it helps the ID'er if I give a detailed written description of what I'm seeing personally. Sometimes things don't always look exactly how they do in real life from a photograph.

I for one appreciate everyones contribution to this thread especially Alans. There is a reason I posted another set of clearer pictures, and wasn't taking any mycelium cultures until I had a solid ID. Besides according to my reading during this educational journey many Hypholoma have been shifted in and out of the Psilocybe genus.
