Pasta water for LC / agar?
    #26411164 - 01/01/20 03:54 PM (4 years, 28 days ago)

Random thought I had while making dinner: can I use the water from boiling organic, whole wheat pasta (unsalted) for LC / agar? Just figuring that you can use the liquid from boiling grains and potatoes, and chemically this should be similar, but haven't seen anyone on here mention it since like 2001.

So has anyone tried this? If not, I'll save the water from tonight's dinner and test it and report back in a couple weeks.

Seems like it would be cloudy to me, but it might work.

Do you think it could maybe be strained a few times through a cheese cloth or something to clear it up a bit or are your thoughts that I'd be cloudy no matter what?

Yeah, but isn't that true for grain / potato water as well? Anyway I saved about 250ml of it and ran it through a coffee filter 4 or 5 times to get rid of sediment. Still cloudy, but shouldn't that clear up (at least in LC) once the myc starts digesting the starches?

You can get it pretty clear with red potatoes if you filter it good enough

Dont know. Never done it.

Cloudiness is typically cause for concern in regards to contamination. But if it already starts out cloudy, thats different. Try it, see what happens. Be sure to start with a known clean culture, no spores.

It may clear up with colonization too.

I literally was cooking pasta two days ago and was thinking the same thing, im sure it would work, it wouldn't be much different than grain water.

Oh yeah, I have a few very pretty clones on agar after a couple transfers, definitely wouldn't mess around with LC using anything I wasn't certain was clean.

And fwiw, I currently have a grain water-based LC just about finished that started out cloudy but once colonized it's super clear. (At least, before swirling... there's some sediment I don't think the myc is interested in eating - might be gypsum? - and when I swirl it, the LC gets cloudy again until everything settles.) Just to be safe, I tested it on agar, and after 4 days the only thing growing is nice clean cube myc. So that's what I'm trying to replicate. (Also have some LME-based LCs going, but I just like the idea of finding another use for leftover cooking liquid rather than just pouring it down the drain.)

Seems like you can make agar out of anything. I saw a thread somewhere with a huge list of things people made agar mixes from. All kinds of pet food and seeds basically anything with nutritional value.

At least pasta water makes sense as a by product of dinner lol.

So just for those following along at home... I strained the pasta water through a coffee filter 4 or 5 times into a measuring cup:

Then placed it into the fridge to cool. An hour later, some thicker stuff had settled to the bottom, so I poured the thinner liquid into a new container (getting rid of the thicker stuff) and strained again. I then diluted it by 50% with tap water because it seemed a bit too starchy still (this was an "it just felt right, nothing more specific than that" choice) and put the resulting broth in a 500ML lab bottle and two half pint jars with SHIPs.

PC'd for 30 minutes @ 15 psi, and the finished result actually looks much clearer than when it went in:

It's not totally clear at this point, but almost, and there's no sediment or anything to swirl. The closest comparison I can give is coconut water, with just that slightly pale, almost milky tint. I actually think this is a helpful characteristic - if all goes as planned, the liquid should get clearer as the myc consumes the starches, and so when it's fully transparent we'll know it's ready.

Going on vacation this weekend, but when I'm back I'll knock it up and see what happens. Stay tuned?

Looks like it’ll do well based on that bottles color.

Knock it up before you go!

Thought about that but I'm gone for 8 days and would expect a matted-up mess at that point without swirling. Not great for science.

Grain water kicks ass for lc and for agar. I'm sure pasta water would be great. I've been making beer lc and grain water lc and they might start off a little cloudy but they clear up as it starts colonizing. I don't worry about if it's clear or has sediment, it just gives the Mycelium something to hang onto.

Have read about people doing beer LC, sounds interesting. Do you cook off alcohol first or not worry about it? And what % beer vs. water?

if you aren't cooking your pasta with enough salt that nothing could possibly grow on the water that comes out you aren't cooking your pasta right

Zero argument there! I specifically avoided salting the water this time just to try this. We'll see if the LC's any good, but the pasta was definitely suboptimal. (This could be a major flaw in the tek...)

Bad pasta tek? Though if you end up making a "special" mushroom sauce to go with it, it might be worthwhile...

When I do it I use Miller. I use maybe 100ml beer and the rest water for a half pint jar but lately I just eyeball it until I get a nice caramel color with hardly any suds. I don't worry about the alcohol I think it boils off in the PC. After the PC I get a little sediment but it colonizes and floats around. I do use a mag stirrer for a while each day. I have had a couple that didn't grow anything in the beginning and that's why I eyeball it and keep it more dilute now. I'd say 1/4 is about the ratio beer/water that I'd start with. I started doing it bc I'm usually having a beer while I work and it's convenient nutes.

When I do grain water I do 50/50 if it's murky, or 100% if it's pretty clear. The grain water I use is only from a 20min simmer so it's pretty clean. I've done wheat berry water and wbs water, the wbs water comes out filthy.

I’m pretty sure that whatever beer agar has going for it is the same thing LME has...

That was my thoughts exactly. I got my lme from a beer brewing place. I ran out and have been doing beer agar ever since. Just a splash when I make the agar. I like my nutes dilute.
