Happy New Year! Is this white mold?
    #26411133 - 01/01/20 03:32 PM (4 years, 28 days ago)

Hello everybody! Great 2020.

I'm not sure but this looks like mold to me. Maybe I should have washed the cake better because it still had some vermiculite on top and now there this white fluff different from the mycelium, or is it just new young mycelium?

Whyd you wash the verm off? Just double end case and stick another cake on top. Saves room in your fc

Thanks for the reply.

So you say I should put new vermiculite on the bottom and on top, to keep the cake wet?
And stick another cake on top. Nice.

And do you sterilize the vermiculite for the casing?

I'm thinking that may be mold also because the cake near to this is fruiting already and they had the same exact process. But until I'm not sure I'm keeping it...

Search here for "Dunk and Roll"  - that is what is the suggested approach for most BRF cake TEKs (essentially creating a tiny casing coating).

Also I would NOT stack the cakes - I've never heard about that before. Perhaps Diego can point to a TEK that mentions it but it doesn't sound like a great idea (severely reducing surface area).

No need to sterilise - consolidated cake should be able to fight off any contamination for a while.

Surface area doesn't really dictate overall yeild. It'll produce until the sub gets used up or it contaminates.
