Panaeolus species?
    #26411060 - 01/01/20 02:43 PM (4 years, 28 days ago)

So I came across this patch today under some california redwoods at a schoolyard in southern california. I also found some growing in the grass and directly from wood chips...

They have a jet black spore print

It seemed to me like some of the specimens had light blue bruising on the base when i picked them

I am leaning psathyrella myself.... but those mottled gills and interesting stems are what have me puzzled. They are not so fragile as most psathyrella are. The stems stay together and don’t really snap or split like psathyrella. They have a little bulbous base with rhizomorphs like a panaeolus

Thanks bud, happy new year to you too. My eye says Psathyrella corrugis but you say the stems are not brittle so I’m not sure

They are “brittle” but not in the classic way that you get that crisp snap from most psathyrella. They stay together. The caps are brittle but have a little more meat to them.. is there a good resource you could recommend that go further into depth on this species?

Melzer’s key is pretty good but requires microscopy in some cases:
