Side Pinning
    #26409204 - 12/31/19 11:44 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Hey there,
So I have a couple tubs and am getting almost exclusively side pins. I was thinking about dunking the tubs by filling them with water and drilling holes in the bottom to drain the water. I am then planning on filling in the area between the tub and substrate with saturated vermiculite.
What do you all think? So far out of three tubs I've only pulled about 12 grams :/  Any tips / advice would be massively appreciated.
Thanks

Are you using a liner in your tub?

Show some pictures. Exclusive side pins means your surface conditions are not conducive for growth but your micro-climate between the wall and sub is. Create better surface conditions and you'll get some shroomies on the top. You still most likely get side pins as well, until you get the conditions perfect.

If you want to rehydrate the tub, I wouldn't drill holes to drain. Try a siphon or something. Drilling holes may dry out your sub (further making conditions worse) when trying to fruit. Keep that in mind if you do decide to drill.

Filling the side with vermiculite seems like a pain. Just make the surface conditions better. Show a pic and maybe someone can tell you what to do.

Check out the Grocery Bag Liner Tek in my signature. Wally World grocery bags fit right into a 6qt shoebox.

Liners are the only way to go with mush cult. Lots of trusted cultivators use them for all their grows

That's my only advise because that's the only way I know how to prevent side/bottom pinning

Liners keep the oxygen on the top of your sub block and not the sides and bottom

Good luck!!

Do you worry about light getting through those bags? I use trash compactor bags for my Monos. I dont think a walmart bag would suffice in my case. Might try in a shoebox sometime

As for rehydrating I say forget the dunk and just spray it really well between flushes. Its what i do and it hasnt let me down

Light doesn’t matter. Besides helping side pins my favorite part of liners is not cleaning tons of stuff out of the tubs after each grow, I have a couple shoeboxes I’ve used like five times I could probably go return to the store right now lol.

I use clear liners so I can see what’s going on too.

But op we def need more info/pics

For sure on the mess. im with you on that. I was always under the impression light induced prepinning. I'll give the clear liners a try sometime and compare. What material do you use

My bulk sub is coir but for liners I just use clear trash bags.

I just got into cult a few months back and it seems like fanning and blocking light had just phased out at that point.

As more people experiment it seems like air exchange is the biggest factor for pinning.

I use coir, manure compost, verm, and a couple tsp of lime to buffer and i never case unless required. I dont mist or fan unless its between flushes. I average 7 to 8 on the first flush on 54q tubs.

Why the lime? I thought that was only for peat casings?

As the mushrooms eat through the sub it raises the ph. The lime helps with multiple flushes by buffering it

The fact that he isn't getting any pins on the top means something is really wrong with his surface conditions. The liners will help to prevent side pins in future grows (too late to do that on this grow), but won't solve his poor surface conditions now or in the future. He'll just have no pins at all, on the side or the top. The primary goal for the OP is to solve his surface conditions. Then you can worry about preventing side pins altogether. OP, send a pic of your surface conditions.

To me looks kinda dry in some of those shots. Happy little cluster though.

I like to use casing. Lately I've been doing it without casing just to be able to do it. I also still sometimes use the wax paper trick to get things going. But I was thinking if the walls of the tub make better conditions for pins then isn't that kind of the same thing the casing does also? The tub wall makes a micro climate just like the casing does. I never really dealt with side pins till I started skipping the casing. What do you guys think?

My side pins stopped after i started using liners and stopped casing. I feel a casing with no liner causes it because the sides get exposed to fruiting conditions faster than the top which has to push through the casing. Also i feel it could be light exposure to the sides. These are all opinions based on my own experience. Not facts as far as i know
