I found this mushroom yesterday morning. It was growing on a sand dune beside the Gulf of Mexico in South Alabama.

Melanoleuca is what I'm thinking.

Clitocybe or a closely related genus.
Not so much.
That Melanoleuca is cool!

It was a fun one to run up on. I was not expecting to find anything growing on the beach.

I live nearby where you are and in my 50 years, I have never found a mushroom on the beach unless there was a lot of trees around, but never in the dunes, very cool.
Edit: Thank you for being a shroomery supporter, very cool of you.

I agree, that's why I try to give as much time to it as possible to the site and I am a strong advocate for harm reduction. Fungi has the next big cure waiting to be discovered. We haven't even scratched the surface in identification of fungi, so many out there waiting to be found. I predict that we'll see an expansion of distribution ranges for a lot of mushrooms alone, not to mention the other fungus out there.

It appears new species are being discovered faster than they can be described. And then there is the introduction of DNA sequencing and following revision of a lot of species concepts. Basically there are too few dedicated mycologists to keep up with such a development. Even being a minuscule part of this whole thing is pretty exciting.
