Its hard to see in the picture. Are they discolored? Is the slime clear? How long have jars been colonizing?

They have a somewhat grayish-brownish discoloration and now there is an odor that is permeating the Tyvek that I have sealing the jar.
They have been colonizing for about ten days but there is no signs of growth on my agar plates so is this just normal rotting for rye berries and the culture never took.

But was it the culture or is that what rye berries do as they rot.

It could be the culture. Did you buy it or make it yourself? How old was it and how was it stored?

I bought it an used it immediately. It must just be the source of the culture.

Are you experiencing cold temps in your area? Is it possible it froze in the mail (blue oysters usually survive in my experience)? Id contact the supplier and send them your picture and explain the situation. Most reputable suppliers will make it right even if it was the buyers fault.
