Official 2020 chilli growing thread 1

Last year I started sowing my seeds way too late in mid march so Im getting a head start for 2020 and sown my first lot of seeds. I got some hot bois in a trade in the summer so I have: Carolina Reaper Habanero Ghost scorpion 7 pot brain strain And some sweet yellow cherry's
Also doing some: Scotch bonnet jalapeno And moruga
I've also been over wintering a scotch bonnet and a couple of bhut jolokia plants from the summer so hopefully if I've done it right they should kick off again at the start of the spring.

Mostly sauces and powders. I didn't grow as much last year because I had a deep freeze full but then my deep freeze took a shit a few months ago and I lost everything. Now I don't have diddly to make sauces with this winter. Like 2 freezer bags and that's it.

I’m going to do about a dozen plants, not the usual 80-100. I’ve been loosing interest and moving on to the next hobby. Thus why I’m here. Lol. Reminds me I should be starting some seeds.

There’s a really great forum dedicated to growing hot peppers. Bunch of really friendly helpful people.
I can send you some seeds if you’d like. My catalogue is a little too long to list but I can send you a good selection of my favorites.

This is a bit weird. Nothing else has germinated yet but the yellow cherries have shot up. It's 2 weeks and they are huge already. I think I'll have to repot them today.

1-3 weeks is pretty normal, soaking overnight in some camomile tea before germination helps. The tannins help soften the shell and has anti fungal properties.

I'm looking a bit of advice here. So out of the ones sown back in January none have germinated yet and I've started all the ones you sent me D3 and so far just the Christmas blue has germinated.
I know my temperature isn't very consistent going from about 19 to 22c and the days are still really short.
Is it worth me getting a light at this stage ? I'm guessing it'll give a but more consistent temp but will light help germination at all?

Bumholio, Heat will help with germination, and a light can provide heat. Light will help later. Some "Serious" gardeners use a germination heat mat to start.
For example I happen to have a fermentation chamber with adjustable temperature. I put the seeds in a wet paper towel in a bag @85F until a root emerges. My seeds germinated in less than a week that way. And I am seeing first true leaves on some now.

Yea I use a couple heat mats, for germination. I also use T5 lighting indoors until plant out. Most everything I planted has already germinated. They make mats specifically for seed germination or if you have an aquarium heater you could make yourself one those incubation boxs like for spawn jars

We are up and running I've transferred about 16 seedlings this morning and have another 4 or 5 different types to sort out.
I bumped The temp up to 26c for a day (by accident ) and they all started coming up.
I've ordered a CFL T5 lamp which will be here tomorrow, so that should help a bit until the days start getting longer

Lol, I know fuck all about lights but apparently this is self ballasted?? As far as I can work out that means you can screw it straight in the rose and away you go.
Obviously this isn't ideal but atm they're getting way more light than they would without it, so it'll do til I can come up with something else.

I haven't fed mine anything yet. I've used a compost mix when I've re potted them of 2:1:1:1 general purpose compost, hpoo, verm, perlite.
@D3monic, is this right for Christmas blue? I've re potted 2 seedlings and both have gone like this, no others have though they're all green.

potting up some of my seedlings. I bought these bio-degradable fabric bags. Trying an experiment. Some of them are in Miracle Grow potting soil. It has food in the soil. Others are in crappy dollar store soil - feeding with Masterblend 4-18-38. (hydroponic food) I am also trying one kratky hydroponic jar. That one was a runt. If it overtakes the plants in soil I will be impressed.

Soil Update: I have a clear winner in my soil comparison. Miracle Gro seed starting mix - 6 peppers on the left. Cheap dollar seed starting mix - 6 on the right. In the middle - when I realized the plants in cheap mix stopped growing I re-potted them in Miracle Gro.
Left center and right top are the same variety "Queen Laurie" Middle ones started to re-grow, leading me to think the problem is the soil, not nutrient burn. I saw a similar comparison on YouTube, where Pro Mix was the clear winner over Miracle Gro potting mix.

Looks like bls but also looks like they have some nutrient deficiencies going. Bls isn’t a death sentence, I’ve had it on indoor plants before that has gone away once planted outdoors..

We had an unforecasted frost June 14! Suffered some serious losses. I am thankful my income doesn't depend on produce.
Mother nature can be harsh. I still have hopes they will recover.
And I also have a couple of hydroponic plants that were indoors at the time of the frost. They are doing the best. Fidalgo Roxa and Scotch Bonnet - The little one is a Queen Laurie clone. (And the really little ones are basil)

Have had shit weather and my puppy at 3/12 pepper plants. Just put them in some garden boxes yesterday. Have a greenhouse that I really wanted to get going this year but it tends to be over 120 degrees in the greenhouse.
My exhaust fan is not removing the heat fast enough, this greenhouse is a nightmare and really upset I bought it.

Most of my frost damaged peppers made a miraculous recovery, (some are stunted) They are loving the weather now that it has finally stopped freezing
Edit: In the background- apples, brussels sprouts, and cherry tomatoes.

Show off your fruits!
Just setting fruit in the garden, but the hydroponic ones are well ahead.
Fidalgo Roxa. They start dark, then lighten up when ripe.

My Trinidad Scorpion gave me a couple dozen fruits this season. Ate a tiny piece of one fresh and was expelling mucous for about 20minutes, good times. Gonna slice em up and make chilli flakes

Hi Guys. I hope I didn't hijack the thread too bad!
I hope you all had a good chili season! My homemade fermented sauces have been absolutely awesome Inspired by D3monic I am smoking some chilies now to make another fermented sauce. I will cool them down after smoking and mix with some unsmoked chilies and inoculate with a spoonful of brine from another active sauce.
Several of the varieties did well, but all of them started fruiting late. Due to mid June freeze. I haven't had a single Queen Laurie ripen yet! But I have an indoor hydroponic QL that WILL ripen
I noticed the 7 pot club guy on YouTube grows in pots and he has ripe fruits in July. in zone 4! Maybe the soil is warmer in the pots, allowing them to fruit earlier? I already ordered some seeds for next year focusing on early varieties, and hoping we don't get a late frost.
