We need to talk about Betelgeuse 9
#26408988 - 12/31/19 09:06 AM (4 years, 29 days ago) |
|
|
Keen observers of the skies may have noticed over the past month a change in the constellation Orion. The once bright red giant star Betelgeuse is disappearing. Since October it has lost 60% of its brightness. Betelgeuse is a variable star, but this decrease is unprecedented. We know that the star has almost run out of fuel, and there is a small chance this dimming means the star has now run out of fissionable material and is collapsing. If this is the case, it may be on the verge of going super nova. If this happens it will become the brightest object in the sky except for the sun. The explosion will last for months and be visible day and night.

I hope I get to see it. Both the supernova and all the crazy’s coming out of the woodwork because it’s the end of the world.

The image of Betelgeuse in the OP is real. It is actually lumpy like that. It is such an unstable star, it’s surface is boiling causing it to not be spherical like most stars.

What really blows my mind is that Betelgeuse could've already gone supernova and we wouldn't find out for around 640 years after it happened. I really hope it goes supernova in my lifetime though, that would be incredible to see.

Apparently a supernova closer than 25 light years would likely wipe out life on earth

Sometime in the next 100,000 years, but when it happens it will be preceded by something like what we are seeing now. As the nuclear fission slows down, the equilibrium between the outward light and heat pressure and the inward pull of gravity is lost. The star collapses under its own weight until it becomes so dense and hot that the iron core begins to fuse into the heavy elements in a massive explosion. The outer layers are blown out into space and the inner core collapses into a black hole or neutron star.
I’m not sure how much warning there will be before it goes nova. I assume at some point if Betelgeuse continues to dim the likelihood of a super nova becomes very likely. Well probably know in a few weeks if this is just an extreme low point in the normal variation of if the star is collapsing.

Seems like this :
Quote:
"There is no reason to believe that Betelgeuse is dimming because it is getting set to explode. Betelgeuse is a variable star and changes in brightness all the time, this is an opportunity to learn more about these long dimming cycles"
is an accurate description of the situation.
This:
Quote:
"We know that the star has almost run out of fuel, and there is a small chance this dimming means the star has now run out of fissionable material and is collapsing. If this is the case, it may be on the verge of going super nova. If this happens it will become the brightest object in the sky except for the sun. The explosion will last for months and be visible day and night."
is an oatmeal raisin cookie.

For real. Oatmeal raisin is the cookie of champions, the champagne of cookies. It's my go-to cookie.

It's just hard oatmeal. Imagine being such a pleb that you think stale oatmeal is the pinnacle of cookie. Ya'll have the culinary taste of medieval peasants.

You just have the culinary insight of a 3rd grader. Hard oatmeal? You've obviously never had any cookies that didn't come out of a nabisco or keebler package. N00b ass.

Uncooked rolled oats are soft, and get this...when they're mixed into the cookie batter, and eventually put into the oven...they get even softer.

Imagine thinking you're about to bite into a nice, melt in your mouth chocolate chip cookie... with the warm chocolate chips almost soothing your taste buds.. Just to take a bite, and get a mouthful of bland breakfast food.. and then... god I can barely even say it.... Instead of that melting chocolate chip... You get... chewy... No, not even chewy... Rubbery... Squint inducing... Soul crushing.... fucking.... raisins.... And having such a lack of grip on reality... that you are happy about it.

Imagine being a cookie elitist about oatmeal raisin... What's next, white bread is the champagne of bread? Carrot cake is the champagne of cakes? What a sad world it must be, being so blind to flavor. Well really, it must almost be nice, being able to eat anything and not caring what it tastes like. I wish I could eat the bottom shelf, D-list version of actual good foods and think it was up there with the best.

White bread was the bread of kings, as it took processing to get the desired colour. All breads have merit, unless you're a charlatan and a coward. Honestly Dylan I haven't been this disappointed in you since you welched on paying Mr. Magenta the $300 European you clearly owed him. I'm disappointed, but not shocked by your behaviour. Maybe if your mother wasn't out doing whatever produced such an insolent, flavour hating harlot such as yourself she could have learned to bake you a decent oatmeal raisin cookie like so many men have come to know and love.

It's not a coat tail, it's part of your wedding dress, sweetie. Enjoy being married to a lackluster and infantile understanding of what a quality cookie is. 10 years from now it'll leave you for someone younger, a toddler perhaps, who actually can appreciate what a chocolate chip has to offer instead of using its honour and reputation to slander quality baked goods.

On a side note I have always wondered if a star is just a cacoon for and white dwarf/black hole etc? Rather reborn. If it happens I am definantly trippin balls for the Universe lol

From other planets
There’s prolly not enough in the solar system. Our biggest planets are 90% gas, and the sun is bigger than all of them combined. Maybe like a super-thin layer? Wrap the sun in some foil lol.

Obv, idk the actual “how”, but it would make sense to redirect the energy to heat mars and/or terraform other planets in the system.

Since someone said “Dyson Sphere”... Anyone think this is possible at all? Like, even if we had the technology, where do we get the materials to build something that goes around the sun?
From other planets
There’s prolly not enough in the solar system. Our biggest planets are 90% gas, and the sun is bigger than all of them combined. Maybe like a super-thin layer? Wrap the sun in some foil lol.

Obv, idk the actual “how”, but it would make sense to redirect the energy to heat mars and/or terraform other planets in the system.
Yeah but maybe THEIR solar system does

If anyone actually cares (I dont) the theory of creating a Dyson sphere is that we invent replicating machines. Four kinds, one kind mines resources from Mercury and/or Venus, one kind creates a solar panel or mirror of some kind from said resources, one takes the panels to the sun, and the last makes more of all of these kinds of machines. So by exponential math, we could eventually harvest an entire planet while doing next to nothing. And we power the whole operation with the energy collected, which would also grow exponentially.
How any of this energy actually gets back to earth is pretty much entirely theoretical at this point. Lasers shot across space that heat generators, futuristic transmission technologies, etc. Seems pretty dumb to fuck with the actual sun but what do I know

Dylan, you have the taste palate of a 6 year old, and your opinion is less valid than LC's. You probably dip carrots in ranch dressing, and have a pantry shelf dedicated to kraft macaroni n' cheese.
Let me break this down for you Oatmeal Raisin: Raisins, cinnamon, brown sugar, butter, touch of nutmeg or clove = A cultured champion's palate Chocolate Chip: White sugar, eggs, flour, salt, vanilla extract, baking soda = A child's palate

There's no indication that Betelgeuse is going to explode anytime soon. And stars don't do fission. Nor does that image actually suggest that there's anything lumpy about its photosphere. The fact that it's dimming doesn't mean that it's collapsing either. If anything it means that it's probably expanded (which would be a necessary step in a type-II supernova), but not enough that the material in it is going to bounce off of itself when it starts to collapse/contract again.

We have no reason to believe that it will go supernova within any of our lifetimes. And despite the recent oddness, there is still no actual evidence that it will go any time soon. Best estimates say 100,000 years from now. You should expect more weird stuff as it's only 100,000 years from supernova which is a very short time in the lifetime of a star.
You're just seeing the beginning of the slow death spiral that lasts thousands upon thousands of years.

Nobody said it was.
It could go anytime in the next 100,000 years. 2020 or 102020 are equally likely.
And records of it behaving strangely do go back thousands of years.

The sun isn’t big enough to go super nova. It will just fizzle out and die leaving behind a cold dead mass of lighter elements

Ive read it will turn into a Red giant as it starts to die which will consume the Earth. Right now the Sun is estimated to be of middle-age.
Quote:
When a star is in its main sequence it is fusing hydrogen atoms in its core which creates energy. Stars in their main sequence are referred to as 'dwarfs', the sun being an example of a dwarf star, all stars will spend the majority of their lifespan in this state before they exhaust their supply of hydrogen. After this stage most stars become giants, for example when our sun can no longer fuse hydrogen in its core it will begin to fuse hydrogen in its outer shell causing it to expand greatly and become a red giant.

There's no indication that Betelgeuse is going to explode anytime soon. And stars don't do fission. Nor does that image actually suggest that there's anything lumpy about its photosphere. The fact that it's dimming doesn't mean that it's collapsing either. If anything it means that it's probably expanded (which would be a necessary step in a type-II supernova), but not enough that the material in it is going to bounce off of itself when it starts to collapse/contract again

Got anything that shows how a 102020 supernova is more likely? Is there more of a chance of it happening in 100,000 years, or tomorrow? Really asking.

Genuinely don't know. Seems like it would pretty much be a shot in the dark to be totally honest (aside from the fact that people can sort of observe it now and make some pretty well educated guesses what's going on inside of it). I don't think that there's a concrete prediction about when Betelgeuse would produce a supernova. There's just a recognition that it's entered a phase of its stellar life cycle where it'll eventually collapse in on itself with such a great energy that its layers literally bounce off of each other.
If you've ever seen that astroblaster toy then it's actually a really similar principle (and that toy was invented by the guy who figured out that that's what was happening). Basically the star expands way beyond any size that could be maintained by its own internal pressure, it starts to collapse, there isn't enough heat from fusion to stop it from collapsing and all of the layers of material in the star just sort of ricochet off of each other. More momentum is transferred to the outer layers than the inner ones (and is sort of transferred to the outer layer from the inner layers), so they tend to go flying off into space with some ridiculous amount of energy.

Don’t they have the best telescope location on Hawaii?
Or maybe they were going to but the natives didn’t want them fucking up the mountains... something like that. Either way, yes the sky there is legendary.

They want to build a thirty meter telescope Mauna Kea but some local politicians are playing it up into some sort of a desecration of a holy site. Thing is that the structure isn't going to be permanent. The entire thing was basically designed to not leave a trace, but it plays pretty well to voters if you can convince them that some forces of technological progress are trying to rob them of their way of life.

Yup Mauna Kea has Keck is currently the biggest optical ground telescope. They want to build a couple HUGE telescope but the Native Hawaiians are rising up againist it. Sacred land and all that. Gotta respect the Aina braddah!

Update
Betelgeuse continues to dim, and is now 20% dimmer than it was when I made this thread

https://spaceweatherarchive.com
Quote:
Astronomers have long known that Betelgeuse is on the precipice of an energy crisis. It’s about to run out of fuel in its core. When that happens, the star will collapse and rebound explosively, producing the first bright supernova in the Milky Way since 1604. Experts in stellar evolution believe Betelgeuse could die at any time during the next 100,000 years or so–a blink of an eye on time scales of astronomy.
Does the current dimming herald that final blast? Probably not. Betelgeuse is a slowly variable star, and this is probably no more than an episode of deeper-than-usual dimming. Of course, one day astronomers will think the same thing … and then the night sky will change forever.
Stay tuned for updates.

The supernova would be visible. It’s fairly close to the plane of the solar system, so there is a time in June when it is almost directly behind the sun, but they say the supernova would be visible even then.

Last night, i gotto see Betelguese briefly thru a mostly clear spot in the sky. Couldnt believe how dim it was! It was as dim as Bellatrix.
Unrealz.
I hope to see it again this week with perhaps clearer skies.
