ForsythHuntings ID Request Thread 1/6/2020

Hello, this thread will be dedicated to IDing various mushrooms found in North GA. I am constantly looking for and finding any sort of mushrooms as I am interested in both actives and non. 1. This “mushroom” has been at this location for at least a year. It is growing beside a stump near the edge of the woods. It seems to be still living as I can bend it without breaking it. I do not want to remove it because it is so old.

2. I found at least 100 of these amongst some young pines. The area is mostly red clay that is near a wash so the ground is constantly washed away. Sorry no spore print on these guys either as I was working.

Haha #1 is definitely a fungus. Sorry for the photo I was trying to make it look like I’m not taking photos of mushrooms in someone else’s yard.

Bump. Anyone know #1 with the bad photo? It has a real woodlike texture to it.

Being in someone else's yard is less sketchy if you're taking pictures of mushrooms than if you are obviously trying to avoid suspicion. If somebody approaches you at least you don't need to lie about what you're doing.

I so agree, when I'm seen taking pictures of mushrooms people take me more seriously when I tell them I have a fascination with mushrooms because most folks minds go to Psilocybe species only and thinks that the average person is only interested in mushrooms containing psychoactive drugs.

I remember a few years back in the spring I was kneeling in front of a tree stump taking pictures of a group of Mycena when this elderly couple comes along, asking if they were "funny" mushrooms. I said that, yes, they're quite funny because they smell like bleach, whereupon the woman goes "ah okay but I mean does it make you funny if you eat them?". I said "well if you eat enough you might get diarrhea, but I haven't treid them".
The guy really laughed at this but the woman seemed a bit disappointed.
Other than that, my impression is that most people don't know about hallucinogenic mushrooms unless they have an interest in them - i.e. either they want to try them, or they're cops or rangers wanting to arrest you.

I'm not sure about other countries but here in the states when I mention mushrooms or someone approaches me while I'm taking pictures or picking mushrooms, the first thing they want to know is if I'm looking for magic mushrooms or they reference magic mushrooms. I've found that most people are aware of the existence of magic mushrooms but only those interested in eating them can recognize them or know of more types of actives other than Psilocybe cubensis. Cubensis is where everyone's mind goes here in the Southeast U.S. and most don't realize that there are woodlovers, they only know about dung loving Psilocybe, and not the active Panaeolus species.

The yard is one of my customers. I just want to avoid any conversation about mushrooms with a customer while I am on their property. As you said, it usually leads to asking about magic mushrooms which I prefer not to get on that topic. I try to keep my business as professional as possible and I like to avoid that conversation all together. If I wasn’t in uniform and working with my employees; yes it wouldn’t be a problem for me.

Here are my guesses.
1. I think the dusty biscuit might be Ganoderma applanatum. It’s less common to see them sprouting from the ground, but it’s not unusual if there are roots right below, also the margin from what I can see certainly looks like it. My only other guess, not really confident on this one but if it is less “conky” and more flexible it might be Inonotus tomentosus. If neither of these; I’d call it Polyporales sensu lato.
4. Armillaria sp. 5. Laccaria laccata 6. Russula brevipes 7. Laetiporus sulphureus or Steccherinum septentrionale
Here’s a pretty interesting paper related to macro fungi in eastern forests. It’s more written for Midwest and Northeast so their fruiting periods are listed earlier. I’d imagine mid Fall in the Northeast is comparable to mid Winter in the Southeast.

I think #2 might be Laccaria bicolor and not laccata. But I could be wrong, I’m on the opposite end of the country and regions usually make a difference.

You can always say that you're a citizen scientist and post pictures on sites such as inaturalist.org were mycologist such as myself look for: research specimens, observation date ranges, distribution ranges and the occasional rare specimen that are found. We need to break the stereotype that only druggies are into mushrooms or that you have to have a PhD to collect data.

I definitely agree with you 100% on changing the stereotype in the mycology field. We are just not even close to it yet. Like I said, if it wasn’t my customer and I wasn’t in uniform with my guys then I would have no problem explaining to them that I am just interested in mycology and I want to snap a few photos for identification purposes.

Another day of hunting. These are all found in a low spot in a deciduous forest. #8

 #9
 #10

I know there is a Canis lupus familiaris in the last photo. I know that for sure! I will be buying a mushroom identification book to take with me soon. So I can try to ID them then you guys can check my work. It will be like grade school all over again.

FH, thank you so much for making this little thread. We hunt almost the same area. I have learned so much about my finds by reading this short thread. I found that alien looking #9 on Sunday as well. I might go back and check for a truffle!
I also found 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 in abundance. I think what is so helpful for me about this thread is that, because we hunt similar areas, many of the slight variations in a species are removed. When you post these pics, I’m sitting here thinking, “I’ve seen that exact fruit before.” When I look at pics of species from other areas I still see similarities, but it leaves me doubting due to small variations in color, size, and general appearance. Thanks for this thread!

I’ll add this to your field guide, as there have been many around the last few weeks. Present in creek beds and base of slopes with heavy leaf coverage.

Wanted to correct my previous ID. 9) Tolypocladium capitatum seems more correct based on MO observations.
