As you said, it usually leads to asking about magic mushrooms which I prefer not to get on that topic. I try to keep my business as professional as possible and I like to avoid that conversation all together. If I wasn’t in uniform and working with my employees; yes it wouldn’t be a problem for me.
You can always say that you're a citizen scientist and post pictures on sites such as inaturalist.org were mycologist such as myself look for: research specimens, observation date ranges, distribution ranges and the occasional rare specimen that are found. We need to break the stereotype that only druggies are into mushrooms or that you have to have a PhD to collect data.

I definitely agree with you 100% on changing the stereotype in the mycology field. We are just not even close to it yet. Like I said, if it wasn’t my customer and I wasn’t in uniform with my guys then I would have no problem explaining to them that I am just interested in mycology and I want to snap a few photos for identification purposes.

Another day of hunting. These are all found in a low spot in a deciduous forest. #8

 #9
 #10

I know there is a Canis lupus familiaris in the last photo. I know that for sure! I will be buying a mushroom identification book to take with me soon. So I can try to ID them then you guys can check my work. It will be like grade school all over again.

9) Elaphocordyceps capitata or pretty damn close. Dig down and see if there’s a truffle under there.

Ah man there is no way I could find it again. This was a few mile hike in the woods that I have never been to.

FH, thank you so much for making this little thread. We hunt almost the same area. I have learned so much about my finds by reading this short thread. I found that alien looking #9 on Sunday as well. I might go back and check for a truffle!
I also found 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 in abundance. I think what is so helpful for me about this thread is that, because we hunt similar areas, many of the slight variations in a species are removed. When you post these pics, I’m sitting here thinking, “I’ve seen that exact fruit before.” When I look at pics of species from other areas I still see similarities, but it leaves me doubting due to small variations in color, size, and general appearance. Thanks for this thread!

I’ll add this to your field guide, as there have been many around the last few weeks. Present in creek beds and base of slopes with heavy leaf coverage.

Wanted to correct my previous ID. 9) Tolypocladium capitatum seems more correct based on MO observations.
