Straw?
    #26402071 - 12/26/19 07:22 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Ok for the past 3 years I ve been doing bags with sterile subs, but had to get rid of my flowhood so going back to pasteurized substrates.
Gonna be doing Panaeolus species but the straw I got seems more like hay and has lots of chaff in It, is this a problem? I see a lot of how to teks arou d but none that show what it should look like? There are no seeds

That straw will work just fine.
The hard part is getting it into smaller pieces.
I use a brush cutter-just throw a bunch of straw into a drum and go to town on it for a few minutes.Youll be left with med-small sized pieces.Or if you only wanting smaller amounts just use a pair of scissors.

Weed whacker in a plastic garbage can with straw in it, or equivalent is the way.  You will want to cover the top with something to contain the dust.  A hole in the lid or something fashioned from garbage bags.

I wish! I live in an apartment I'm sure my neighbors would hate me:lol:
I just used a pair of tin snips and got 66 qts done in about 45 minutes or so.
Rinsed it off a bit by putting it in my old sgfc then to another tote with a bit of dish soap, let it drain then loaded into food saver bags to pasturize

I believe you can also use a blender or a food processor and pulse it to chop it down a little.
I was chopping straw with scissors last night idk how long it took me to get a full packed quart jar but it felt like 45 mins I was freezing my ass off and the straw was soaking wet from rain.
Next batch I'm definitely hitting with the lawn mower and mulched bag attachment. Fuck chopping by hand lol.

Go down to your local Tractor Supply, Big R, Farm Supply, or other feed store. A lot of them have bales of pre shredded straw.

I'll have to check I never even thought about it, I used to just buy straw pellets which were great but they were pulled from the shelf

They have straw pellets at pet stores for rabbit/guinea pig bedding too, they're kind of pricey though. I used to have an old blender I used to chop straw. It worked great until it broke.
