Wtf is this thing?!

Habitat: On crack in stump of cut down yet living live oak near Folsom lake, California.
Gills: No gills or pores. How does this even make spores?!
Stem: none
Cracked bulbous mass, with a consistency somewhere between marshmallow and dog shit; not really springy. Seems a bit rotted in parts, when I broke a piece off, it appeared somewhat fibrous. Sticky/viscous to the touch. It may also be that the brown parts are old growth which cracked as the new growth emerged.
Bruising: none noticed.
I imagine it does not smell very good. I could not bring myself to sniff it after discovering the consistency.
I am very interested in identifying this abhorrent mass, but no Google searches have yielded anything close. Any help is appreciated!

Inonotus dryadeus aka Pseudoinonotus dryadeus, commonly known as Oak Bracket.
Pro tip: upload to iNaturalist and use their AI software matching. Worked for me

Nah, this is stringy and Pseudoinonotus is a tough polypore - it wouldn't pull apart like that. This probably isn't identifiable, though you could try the Mushroom CSI group on Facebook, they specialize in these difficult cases. iNaturalist AI will misidentify something like this 100% of the time.
The tree is much easier to identify in this case, it's Quercus agrifolia. One of the best mushroom trees.

Alan,
I agree that this is probably not identifiable, but just for arguments sake, Wikipedia on Inonotus dryadeus states:
"The flesh is soft and fibrous", and "Fruiting occurs in summer and autumn, but fruit bodies may overwinter and persist for several years, eventually turning black and cracked."
My thinking was that the current specimen in question may an old/soggy/rotting version of its old self having fruited several months ago. I still think Inonotus dryadeus is a reasonable possibility.
In regards to using iNaturalist AI engine, I am not suggesting that it is good for spot-on fungi species identification. Rather it is useful as a tool to generate leads to investigate further when there is little else to go on.
Cheers,
D

I saw some fresh Pseudoinonotus dryadeus in the immediate area, with those blood-red droplets it looked wicked.
I think it's likely a rotten old specimen.
I had no idea about how to use the inaturalist, so I'll look more into that.
Thanks, everybody!
