Hi,
How to fruit a fully conized rye bag of Blue Oyster? Can't seem to find a good TEK.
Can the myc be broken up in the bag and be added to a tub with coir? Sawdust? Coffee grounds? Seeing a lot of grows where ppl just cut holes in the grow bag. Is that because they used saw dust in the grow bag instead of grain??
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME!!

You can fruit it from the bag but mixing it with a substrate is your best bet as if you go from the spawn bag you won't get as much is the short of it. There are tons of threads on shroomery here on how to spawn to substrate and various kinds. Kinda just depends on which substrate you want to use and have available... and so yes usually if they are cutting holes in the bag its because they took the spawn bag and broke it up in the bag and inoculated substrate bags.

if You put it in a tub or shoebox youβre not going to get a great yield. Oysters like to grow off the sides of trees/ bags etc. like seagu said, put it in a bag and cut some slits on the side. Iβve had good success using coir as my sub.

Chop straw into one inches pieces, soak in a bucket for a couple hours, get a 5 gallon bucket, drill one inches holes in an alternating diamond pattern throughout the bucket. After your straw is done soaking drain it and give it a hot water bath for one hour between 160 and 170 degrees. When its done let it strain and cool. Break up your colonized inoculum, put a layer of your pastuerized straw down in your bucket then a handful of your colonized grain then repeat until full. Put the lid on and then place duct tape over your one inch holes you drilled in your bucket. Make a small slit in each peice of tape to allow for fea. Wait roughly 10 days for colonization, the introduce to fruiting conditions

Do you realize the work and time that is put into that process? The only reason anyone should use straw is if they have no choice! I pay $5 for a bag of fuel pellets. I get 33 5 lb bags out of it. It takes me about a minute to fill my bags with sub and less than a minute to spawn. Time is money.

I pay $3 for straw and can get a few columns that are 6ft long. Its all preference. If i were to go the sawdust route, which i have, id skip the pellet fuel and just call up your local saw mill. Get it by the truck load. Its more cost efficient.

How do you sterilize that much at once btw? I use a barrel to pasture roughly 25-30 lbs of straw at once. I can only fit a few bags in my PC at a time.

I can PC 6 5lb bags in a 21 or is it 23? qt presto. And for the same barrel you are using to pasteurize you can add the water level stuff cheap and just convert it to a steamer if you wanted/needed to do a bunch at once.. or get hotplates and a few more prestos to up it to 12, 18 at once.... depending on your wants and needs. But converting your barrel is probably cheaper depending on this and that.

Hey thanks for the ideas! I like to work with straw though honestly. Its cheap. Around here you can get the small sqaure bales for $3-5 or the big round bales for around $50. if you have a tractor its very cost efficient

NP... I can also fit 6 5 lb spawn bags in the Presto as well.... sure makes doing multiple mushroom types at once easier. Spawn out my ears...

Diego, you are correct it is preference. Seagu is also correct I have a 55-gallon steamer. I can fit about 50 5 lb bags in it maybe more. I use a PID to maintain the temp. I used it for straw also when I did straw. I don't think straw is as cost-effective as you think. When you add in your time the price goes way up. I get about 200 lbs of mushrooms for about 6 hours worth of work But like you said it is all preference. By the way, I made a hotplate from an old stove I got for free from craigslist. It is run by a PID also. No more having to wait up for the PC to finish. I press a button and walk away the PID keeps it at the right temp. When I do agar I have it set up so an alarm sounds when the agar is at 140F and ready to pour. No more having to check that crap either. Time is money and the most valuable thing we have so I do everything I can to save time. when it is all said and done and we are on our death beds I am sure we would all give everything we have for more time.
Hotplate setup. It has a KWH meter on it so I know what it costs me for each run which is about $1.80 of electricity for 30 blocks...

The ease of use is what makes it nice. It is cheap to run also. I have helped probably 20 people build steamers. They are well worth the effort to build!
