Uncle Ben's started smelling bad

Well, I am still getting used to using the forums and hope I'm in the right place. Here's my dilemma. I inoculated 4 bags of Uncle Ben's about 2 weeks ago. Checked in this morning and Those bags are starting to stink pretty bad. Of course, still no signs of myc in the bottom window. I suppose I need to dispose of them? Has anyone else had this problem?

Don't go finding the absolute worst techniques and methods to grow. Once you've been around here enough you'll notice something werid about all the people who recommend these devil's advocate ways of growing. Sure it can work but if you don't want to keep making threads about failures don't use a method that isn't proven, isn't repeatable, isn't tried and true.
Of course inoculating bags of premade rice is going to have an abysmally low success rate especially directly inoculating with spores. Spore syringes are not axenic.
Using spores you should always expect losses. Using spores on bad methods expect even worse. Spores to PF cakes or agar is your best bet

Yeah, Man I get that. Trying for the quickest way possible for my living situation and made a couple big rookie mistakes already. But from now on, I'll make my own BRF cakes and go from there. I do have a jar that is producing myc, but very slowly. I peeled the tape off two holes in hopes it would help speed it up. Is that possible? Thanks for replying. I appreciate your knowledge!
Oh, and I'll be throwing out the U.B.'s today. LOL

Micropore. Reading these forums, I seem to get so many opinions on things. Some say it blocks air flow too much, others say it's porousness causes too much air flow, leaving it open to contamination. Therefore, I feel the need to experiment.

Micropore is typically alright as a filter but I recommend using three layers for what you're trying to do
or just whip up some cakes, they work great and aren't much more labor

Ok, so I should recover the two holes that I uncovered? Won't block air? That was my fear.

Are you talking about the Uncle Ben's here or the jar of BRF? The U.B.'s are done for. Three layers seems a bit much, to say the least.

So with the MP tape, the argument it blocks airflow to much is in regards to using it on PF tek jars, since the verm layer is your filter some argue that adding the extra barrier (the MP tape) is redundant and just blocks airflow to much potentially stalling jars. (I used MP and durapore tape on PF jars when I first started and it was never an issue, even when I accidentally bought the wrong tape)
The argument that it's to porous is in regards to when using it on grain jars, grains are more susceptible to contamination than BRF/verm mix so they need a better filter and some argue that MP tape doesn't stop contams from getting through (I havnt used it on grain jars so idk)
Now I could be wrong on that but that's how I view the MP tape debate, I'm sure ill get corrected though but hopefully that helps clear it up a little

Actually, that does help clear things up. It makes more sense separating the two different styles. So do you use MP tape for PF jars now, or just leave the holes open since there's a verm barrier?

I read quickly, whoops. Thought you were still working with your Uncle Bens. 3 layers of tape isn't that much though. It is common for folks doing no pour agar to use 3 layers for their filter and those plates get tons of air, plus you will obv keep out nasties way better than just 1 or 2 layers.. But you don't need micropore for BRF cakes if you have a verm layer.
Add tape again or don't, it shouldn't make much of a difference if you are using a verm layer on your cakes.

It's been awhile since I've done any PF mixture (I switched to grains) but I used to use both verm AND mp tape on PF jars I'm pretty sure, not sure why I used both back then

Mp tape is fine it doesn't block enough for gas exchange even a few layers deep, if it did we would be getting a vacuum effect but we don't. We have seen it for years on pasty plates and it didn't let contams through, hundreds of jars run and none contaminated or stalled from it . If you need an easy stealth grow and don't want to put the work in order yourself a few grain bags and a tamp syringe

This may actually be a good idea. I've read on it a bit. Might be a good back up alongside my next batch of jars. It may be the ticket though, if for no other reason than living in an old crusty building. So, one would actually leave it in the bag till harvesting. Is that right?
