Are you preparing ayahuasca?  If so, you may want to consider doing an egg white clarification of any tannin containing decoction.  Why?  Cheap.  Easy.  Fast.  Effective at reducing tannins that cause nausea. Sure, some will maintain that purging is part of the process...but vomiting (especially when it occurs with coincident diarrhea) is a major inconvenience, is markedly unpleasant, and has its own risks, including, but not limited to aspiration. Need I say more?

Here's how and when:

1)  After your three boils of both MHRB and/or caapi, reduce the water volume down to about 300cc's and allow to cool.  Separate two egg yokes from the whites, and save the egg whites.


2)  Pour the egg whites into the bottom of the pan, and allow it to sit undisturbed for not less than 10 minutes to permit the tannins to settle into the egg whites.

3) Add medium heat, so that the albumin in the egg white congeals.  That's a fancy way of saying cook the egg white in your brew.

4) Pour off through a tee shirt or coffee filter back into a pan to remove the egg white, and add heat to further reduce to your desired final volume.  Your previously mud brown (in this case caapi tea) should now be particle free, clear, and ruby colored while warm.


Here is my cold clarified caapi "tea" in a small jar the following morning after a night in the refrigerator.  ZERO sediment with markedly less nausea-producing tannin.  Although I still find the brew to be far from palatable taste-wise, the chance of :evilpuke:  should be markedly reduced.

I can confirm, from own experience, that this works also with rue tea. :thumbup:

Easy way to filter and clean up a brew to a crystal-clear liquid.

Thanks fellas, but all credit should go to CoAsTal, as it was he who put me on to adding this simple, but important step in ayahuasca preparation.  CoAsTal is a perpetual source of superior knowledge on this board.  All I did was follow his instructions and provide a couple of pictures.

I need to get back into this, i've done it before but sometimes it'd work well other times potency was reduced, so if i can figure out the right way to go about it, i'm getting back into Mimosa/Acacia teas. As for Rue, i just use Rue encapsulated, same with Rue/Harmala extracts, and from what i hear Caapi tea actually isn't that bad to drink so i doubt it'd need to be cleaned up.

Also another tid bit of info, after you do the egg white cleansing, before reducing it down, perhaps try freezing and then thawing the liquid, freezing the liquid will precipitate out pretty much all residual tannins and plant gunk, and then let the brew sit in the fridge for a good few days perhaps to a few weeks, doing so will allow most of that gunk to settle and stick to the bottom of the container you have it in, then gently pour/decant or siphon the clean tea away from the plant gunk, then reduce the liquid down to final volume. You can try freezing/thawing a few times to crash out any possible gunk, or just try one freeze/thaw. But just in case, i'd keep the gunk to the side just in case of potency loss, whether using the egg white cleansing, the freezing/thawing, or both, there could still be some goodies left in the gunk.

I've known about using egg whites to remove tannins for a long while now but never knew what the ideal way to go about it was.
