Rye bags at over a month were great..now look worse

Same bag one week apart. The good one was a day or two after mixing. The other is from tonight. What happened? Trying to keep around 80°F or just under. It's cold here and this house never has the heat on (not my fault, and I regularly am angry about it. Reptile pad under a box under a mini tub. I am at a loss. At the risk of rambling, just ask and I will answer what I know. Sterilized rye bags and spores from a reputable vendor. Costa Rican strain. I have a second bag that also started good but may be headed the same direction. Any help appreciated.

Hey bud welcome to the community...
No need to incubate at those temps. Room temps are just time like in the mid 70's Looking at your picts its obvious that there is bacterial contamination in the bag on the left with that big blank spot on the bottom and grey grains especially the bag on the right shows it being almost all grey looking grains. They should never do that with clean mycelium.
The answer is that the bag is bacterial and needs tossed
I used many of those bags in the beginning and some do ok and some do not. Its a hit and miss thing
If you are going to try it the same way again i would not use a heater, Keep your room temps around 74. Use any and all sterile techniques inoculacing the bag with spores (flame needle tip)
Could have been...
Bad seeds from bag Spore syringe might be dirty Heating pads cause bacterial contamination (alot)
And now for my famous line...

I came here using the same bags and syringes and realized quickly that this a scientific hobby.
This might be a bit much to chew on but it will get you in the right direction as to how we rock the boat around the Shroomery
Dont buy kits Dont use incubators Better to keep a room at 73 then use a heater (weve tested this over and over again to be a better environment for mycelium to grow)
Start by making a SAB (still air box) https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23990888
Youll have to get into AGAR work to get clean mushroom mycelium to inoculate your grain spawn of choice
The make some pasty plates OR Alien plates
Pasty plates https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19208976/fpart/1/vc/1
Alien plates https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26374264#26374264
If you dont want to make your agar like Pasty's tek then you can get some from that FungiPerfecti website. I like the Enriched Agar mix alot.
Then do your own grains I reccommned BODS EASY AF OAT PREP https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24126032/fpart/1/vc/1
Then all you need is either Bods shoeboxes https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25274461/fpart/1/vc/1
OR
Pasties ezdialed monos found here https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26140339/fpart/1/vc/1
Be sure to use liners in your tubs from day one. You will get much much better results doing this
And get a fine mist spray bottle. You are going to need that.
JUST ASK AWAY AND IF WE ARE NOT TOO STONED OR DRUNK WE WILL OFFER ADVISE 😎

Yogi nailed it. Nothing more to add.

I made the same mistake with my grow bags ( i had them on a seed germination pad it heated it up quite a bit to the point where bacillus appeared out of nowhere and underwent accelerated growth)

Thanks, Yogi. I appreciate your candor. It looked even more obvious this morning. Gray bacteria is clear now that somebody forced me to not be in denial. I used sterile methods, but I guess between a premade bag, and the variance in syringe reliability I really screwed the pooch with the overcompensating heat. BRF jars seemed so easy last time I did this... 13 years ago. I will follow your advice. Thank you.

Good to know I'm not the only fool who did that at some point. Learning experience. Not much money lost, just time. Onward and upward.

That is definitely a good attitude to have with this hobby. There will be some stumbling blocks along the way, but if you keep at it and learn from them everything will come together.
I trashed dozens of jars/bags when I was first starting out for one reason or another. I had some cool science projects going on for sure, I remember counting 6 different contams in a single quart one time.
Spore syringe in PF Tek always worked for me. Most all of my failures were occurring while trying to go from spore syringe straight to grain. If you are interested in going further with grains I will echo the advice from above regarding working with agar.

Haha, science experiment for sure. Sounds like learning how to work with agar is pretty important. I appreciate the feedback.

Yep. We all start at the bottom with this hobby and slowly work our way up the ladder

Candor is a good thing... you are welcome.
Its like every tek is its own world and results for each cultivators environment.

Yup Yogi nailed it. I have been there thinking it was just as easy to squirt some spores on grain and its a wrap. Thought agar would be difficult but its very straight forward. I started off buying pre poured plates off Amazon to start which kind of made the introduction a little less daunting.
