Mycelium growing on top of substrate

I transferred my oats to my substrate maybe 5 days ago? Mycelium is now growing on the top. Is this normal? Did I not let my oats colonize enough?

It looks like you didn't cover your grains that well but thats not the end of the world, the mycelium will colonize the sub whatever it may be.

Yes that's normal. The whole substrate becomes food for the mycelium (including the surface) - though, like said earlier, you didn't do that best of a job of making sure your grains we're covered.
Not really a big deal at least - things are moving along just well on your end! Set and forget. About two weeks or so you'll start seeing pinning!

Do your grains need to be covered by a top layer of substrate? Didn't know this was a thing

They don't need to be, but its common practice. I've had many successful tubs with exposed grain. Now I top them with a quarter inch of sub after mixing for peace of mind. Nothing has changed as far as timing goes.

Interesting. I was wondering why my grows looked so different. I just mixed sub and spawn and left it at that. Yield wasn't great. Wondern if that was a factor
