1. Simocybe centunculus? Growing on dead oak. spore print dark brown.

2. Mycena purpureofusca? Growing on dead oak.

3. Mycena californiensis? Growing in moss in a basin of dead oak trunk.

4. Gymnopus villosipes? Spore print white. Growing in moss on dead oak. (We have a lot of dead oak )

5. Phloeomana speirea? I dunno... I see these everywhere.

6. Bolbitius titubans? I'm pretty sure on this one.

7. Gymnopus dryophilus. I've parboiled these and am ready to saute'. Unless someone here gives me a Red Flag. Spore print white.

I think Simocybe could be a good suggestion for the first one, but comparing with description and available pictures makes me think it's perhaps S. sumptuosa.
It would help with more pictures (gill shots) and info.

Thanks! I'm assuming "amethystina" refers to amethyst, ah, very appropriate. This one was so pretty in the moss I couldn't disturb it to get more info on gills. (I always think of Gary Larsen's classic cartoon of the lepidopterist... "Watson, look at the sheer beauty of this butterfly... hand me the bottle of ether!"

I certainly agree as from what I'm reading. Check out pic below from the smaller green mushroom... I believe you can see gills that have "margin fringed with white beads" as Siegel and Schwarz say in Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast. Of course I'm happy with simply Simocybe; it's just interesting that this little pair appears in only one spot, far as I can tell (really hard to spot!).

Simocybe and Phloeomana are correct. The purple one isn't Laccaria, maybe Tricholomopsis.
Here is a key for the Mycena on oak:

Wow... thanks, Alan, for the link... I must say this is a mighty complicated business. That "purple one" is an enigma... I will hike up there tomorrow and see if it looks any different (if it's still there and I can find it). As for the Mycena on oak, yeah, I think Mr D Green pegged number 2 as M. bulliformis, but the other is clearly NOT californiensis.
Thanks for chiming in!

The other almost certainly is M. californiensis. Next time get good pictures of the gils of each, especially Mycena. Preferably with flash.

It's way better than the pictures in the Audubon field guide. Gary wrote that when he had only been into mushrooms a couple years.
It's a style of photography very different from field guide photography, it reminds me a lot of Chris Mckenna's style, you can see his work at https://www.facebook.com/AngryOyster or on Instagram. I think he posts here sometimes too. He uses more external light sources though.
For a field guide you want all features visible in one photo. Here is a Mycena californiensis pic I took the other day in the field guide style: https://mushroomobserver.org/397476. For this one I used mostly natural light, but also turned on the light on my cell phone and waved it in a large arc over the camera lens as the photo was exposing to get some extra light coming in from all angles.

Ah, ok, as for M. californiensis I was thrown off by a picture of in the link that exhibited the mushrooms in deep, bright color, but I guess they can vary that way.
I've been considering using flash... I will experiment. Waving your phone over the lens is a great idea! Thanks for the great info.
Thanks, Alan, and Stosch!

Another pair on the rise!

Flashed this mushroom (B. titubans?) from below (off camera flash at 1/8 power). My shots often suffer from not enough depth-of-field... I am using an 80-200 zoom with screw-on close-up lenses. Maybe time to upgrade.

A 60mm or 100 mm macro lens would be good, also try bouncing the flash off of a large white object like a tshirt or paper.

Ebay sells a $20 universal ringflash setup that actually isn't half bad. It's great for mushroom pictures. Also, if you have a Nikon, they make an affordable 40mm macro lens, focal lenght could be longer, that would help, but picture quality is on par with 3x more expensive lens. That said, your pictures are really excellent Grosbeak, even with your current setup!

Thanks, Tangich, and good suggestions. No ID needed on the one below but have to share how I hiked back to get more info on gills... this new pair seemed to read my mind. I'm thinking the gills look more like Mycena than Gymnopus.

Ah, found B. aleuriatus (sunsu CA) in "Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast." Looks right on to me. Thanks!
