Dried the hell out, vacuumed, buried, wet after 1 year
    #26404396 - 12/28/19 09:59 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys, haven't been here for a long time and unfortunatelly forgot my old account. So, about 1 year ago I cultivated some shrooms and all worked fine thanks to the help of this site.

I spent a lot of research and money about conservation, so I bought a dehydrator and a vacuum sealer and made some packages.

After dehydration they were cracker dry. I dehydrated them to cracker dry and then let them wait for some days so that the inner moisture could redistribute and then dehydrated them again for hours and vacuum sealed them directly after that.

I repacked those vacuum sealed packages in another plasic bag and another one around and buried them at 2 flower pots (I'm paranoid ).

So now after one year I wanted to get some on hand supplies and in one flower pot the vacuum sealed packages were wet inside. In one package there was even a little bit of mold in one corner of the bag.

In the other ones from the other pot, the packages also seem to be wet, they don't crack anymore, but here no mold an still lokking quite good.

I didn't expect that could happen. All packages in each flower pot hat the same state, but in the one it was worse than in the other. Now well, it happened.

Any experiences with dehydrating shrooms again after such an incident? Will they loose potency?

Thanks for reading!

They sound like a total loss to me man. Your vac bags probably suck

Moisture doesn’t teleport through sealed plastic.  If there wasn’t moisture when you buried them, then the sealed bag failed.

Yes I do also think it was the bags. Well, the shrooms were not totally soaked with water but also not cracker dry anymore. Rubber like consistency. Looks somewhat like fermentation. And the ones in one flower pot were much worse that the ones in the other. They got somewhat darker, nearly brown but do still have the same well known smell.

I'm currently dehydrating those bad ones again (without the one that got mold) and will taste them tomorrow so see if they are still potent. More disgusting than they are anyway they can't get.

So when I think about it it must have been the bags. Because there were 2 pots with 2 individual conditions. And all bags in one pot always look the same. That also implies its not a bad sealing by mistake on a single bag. And all shrooms had the same conditions when they were put into the bags.

Yeah vacuum bags only work so well when you use food saver brand even. If your flower pots were subject to freezing that could have expedited things. Even without freezing water is really good at finding it's way into things and bags simply won't survive. I've had vacuum sealed buds in dry conditions stay sealed for years, but anyone who has tried their hand at sous vide cooking can tell you those seals don't hold up to more than hours in hot water consistently.

Probably would have been okay if you had put them in a water proof container first, like something meant for marine use.

I once did literally the exact same thing. They were cracker dry, vac sealed and buried, outside but under a roof, for about 3 or 4 months in the wintertime.
They weren't wet but they had turned kind of brownish and weren't cracker dry anymore, and they easily crumbled in the hand. There was no mold or any obvious contam and they were still "edible" but not appealing at all and they had lost a lot of their potency. It was like the aging process had been accelerated, I thought maybe it was through freezing and thawing repeatedly.
BTW what IS the best way to store them long term?
I don't usually keep them around long enough to care, except that one time when I left town for the winter and buried them.

although we nurture them. feed them, give them shelter and food and watch them grow they are not dead pets and dont belong buried  in the back yard lol  a simple vac sealed bag inside a air tight container in a dark cool environment seems to do me just fine. i have shit thats years old and just as good as the day they were dehydrated and packaged.

I had some do the same thing, but I started throwing desiccant packs in there and they seemed to hold up pretty good. If i was looking for a long term storage I'd vac them with a couple desiccant packs and then get some pvc pipe and seal them up in there, probably want some dryer packs in there too.

Hey, yeah, meanwhile I tried shrooms of both plants and there is nearly no potency left.

Man that sucks. So it took some days to handle the shock. So what now... make new shrooms

I think I have done it the wrong way... my idea was to produce that much shrooms to have enough for a long long time. Maybe it is just better to cultivate only the needed amount for half a year or so. This also helps to keep the sporeprints fresh and hopefully makes more fun. The amounts I had produced were just to much and cultivating and harvesting became work that didn't make fun anymore.
