Questions about Harvesting - with Pics
    #26404231 - 12/28/19 08:07 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

First: Is it normal to have such a diverse growth in size or are there certain conditions that cause this?

Second: Im going to be gone for the next 30 hours, do I pick these larger ones now to avoid them opening and dropping spores or do I have enough time?

Third: I was going to float my substrate to harvest but now with so many side pins that are smaller, Im wondering if I should transfer entire substrate to a larger tub to allow them to flourish. Question is how to remove as I dont want to float and wet all the side shrooms, but if I flip I will crush top mushies. Any ideas?

1) Yes. That all has to do with genetics. They all have different genetics causing some to be bigger, smaller, odd shaped, etc. Best way to get universal genetics is to clone.

2) Those have a lot more size to put on. Now, mushrooms can grow extremely fast. 30 hours and they may be fully mature and have dropped spores. I would have rather spores dropped than to pick a non-mature fruit. Spores dropping is not even that bad. A lot of people make it sound a lot worse than it actually is. Just harvest them when you get back. Hell, you even may get back just in time to harvest them before spores - it's hard to put on time frame on them.

3) I harvest the top mushrooms, and then I will flip the sub like a pancake into my palm/forearm and harvest bottom/side pins from there. Then place back into the shoebox after I'm done and do a dunk. This is risky, as you may break the sub.. I've just gotten pretty good at it. They're pretty durable.. just gotta make sure the weight of the sub is evenly distributed throughout your palm and forearm.

Thanks Vibe!

Well I think the size is due to them coming through the substrate at different times?

So was considering getting myself a cookie rack to use to flip them. However, due to the different time frames these have started to come through, was going to harvest the bigger ones, then wait a couple more days for the others to get bigger. I know some folks harvest all at once, but seemed as though thats because they had a more even growth across their substrate whereas mine certainly seems delayed in certain areas.

Hey, a cookie rack is a good idea! I may take you up on that idea for future reference haha! And the size difference is due to that, yes. Some just grow faster than others. That's usually when you clone, you pick the one's that were first to pin, grow the fastest, and in a good cluster. Those are all characteristics that you want to look for when cloning.

Personally, I just wait until they've all grown mature.. or all have at least put some more size on. Some may have dropped spores while other's seals may have not broken yet. I usually try and get them right before the seal breaks.. but sometimes that doesn't happen and it's no biggie.

Do what you please brother. In the end, it's all objective. If you want to harvest the bigger one's now, and let the smaller ones grow while you're away, that's not the wrong way of looking at it either! At the end of the day, you've got mushrooms and that's all that matters. At this point - it's all about preference! Though, those mushrooms will grow a lot more if you leave them alone and let them do their thing!
