Dealing with uncolonized surface kernels in quart jars

A few kernels on the surface of the spawn in my quart jars are always slow to colonize and can delay the process while I wait for them to finish; especially with less aggressive strains.
I was wondering if anyone has a strategy to prevent this from happening?
Or do you not worry about a few uncolonized kernels and spawn the jars?
Scrape them out with a spoon maybe?
Thanks for any feedback!

If I have slow or uncolonized kernels I shake and see if it recovers. If it doesn't recover it prob wouldn't make good spawn. I have a GATZ quart that was like that. Real fast on agar but slow on grain. I shook and it recovered and has colonized everything but I thought for sure it would go bad after the shake. It's been a month since I a2g... I'm still hesitant to spawn it tho.

Hmmm.. a 2nd shake.. that's an idea. I'm not sure if it would speed up the process though. I haven't had any trouble spawning and fruiting these less aggressive strains. I assume the surface grains are just getting a bit dried out.

What are you using for FAE/filtration? The other 99% of the grains seem to be doing fine, so I wouldn't worry about them.

Happens to me all the time. I used to shake and then allow to recover for a day, but now I just spawn em like that and havent noticed any problems yet.
Is it a risk? I can't say with any certainty that it's not. All I know is that I've personally been getting away with it.
I like to think, when you shake before spawning, the mushroom mycelium ends up all over the grain and will take hold before any mold has a chance to germinate. Either that or the substrate just reaches full colonization before mold germinates.
I hate to encourage bad habits. Obviously 100% colonization is always your best bet but just thought I would share my experience.

Ive made a bad habit of spawning jars with a few dozen grains left uncolonized. Never had an issue with contamination before.

Yep. Most of my wbs jars end up with a few and they get spawned. Haven't had any issues. No biggie.

I recently tried some different SFD configurations and noticed the top layer of WBS drying out a bit at around 95% colonized. Each seed has some myc on it, but not fully covered. I waited a but for other jars to finish but will just be spawning them tomorrow. I'm doing mini monos with 1 quart per tub so at this point there is no reason not to give it a shot.
I say go for it and see what happens. If this is a recurring issue, I was look into the moisture content and retention of the jars.

I use a synthetic filter disc over a lid with 4 x 1/16" holes drilled in it.
Thanks guys, I won't stress about it.

I sometimes have this problem too, but it's not a biggie, I just pick out the uncolonised grains and spawn, but I don't think it is even necessary.
