Too much at one time - Drying and Storage Question
    #26402020 - 12/26/19 06:43 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I know it isn't a bad problem to have multiple tubs fruiting at the same time, but I do not have enough space in my dehydrator. I currently have the last half of a mono and some second flush shoe boxes in the dehydrator that should be done tomorrow.

I have one mono that's ready to go and another that will be ready tomorrow. Plus a bunch of shoe boxes, some on their second and some on their first.

I've ordered another dehydrator but it wont be here until Saturday. Should I go buy another tonight at walmart if they have one? Or can I harvest and store in the fridge for a couple of days while I run through some drying cycles?

relying on a Saturday drop is hit and miss. might be wise to go buy one at wally's and return it after yours arrives Saturday or Monday.

Thats a good point. I live a five minute walk away from an amazon warehouse and they still tend to deliver late in the day. I know I can keep mushrooms in the fridge for a day or two with minimal problems but I hate how blue they turn when drying but that could be from me vac sealing them fresh. I didn't even think about returning it when done. Good idea.

once I had to cram a dehydrator heaping so the trays didn't touch and taped a cylinder of paper around the outside to guide the air up better and just move around as needed. Then I found a dehydrator at goodwill for 3 bucks and don't even use it just took the trays and stacked more on mine and if it goes out I gotta backup. Good luck

If I was in your shoes I wouldn’t really worry about getting my shrooms in the dehydrator if I didn’t have room, I would just lay them out and let them dry naturally until I had room for the dehydrator. I always used a mesh screen though. I’ve dried shrooms without a dehydrator plenty of times and they were just fine. Maybe I’m just a little old school. No reason to panic is all I’m saying, as long as they get dry before storage you’re good.

I'd wrap them in a paper towel and toss em in a paper bag in the fridge. 3-4 days is totally fine like that, and you won't even be keeping them there that long. Hell, with a timer, you should be able to hit a few dehydrator cycles before Saturday. How long do you usually dehydrate and what kind of dehydrator do you have?

You can put them in a laundry basket with a box fan pointed down.. works great

You can just use one basket too

Before I built my dehydrator, I threw a furnace filter over a box fan laying on its back. It's not perfect but would buy you some time while your other batches finish up.
Built my dehydrator out of a wardrobe moving box, desk fan and a heat lamp. But if you have one ordered already, probably no need to build one.

This is genius with the laundry baskets. I don't know why I never thought of that. I imagine you could get a small electric space heater blowing hot air above the intake of the box fan to make it even more effective.

You can use some cardboard to make walls to set ontop of your current dehydrator, or underneath if the element is top mounted. A convection oven with the dp0r ajar is also effective if you so happen to have one.

Thank you for the reassurance. I 've always had paranoia over the fruits rotting or oxidizing. I've always staggered my grows to avoid this problem, but I started late this season and didn't have time to this year. I got another dehydrator and actually just finished loading it to the brim. This gives me peace of mind at least.

I have two Cosori 5 trays and just bought a cheap presto to get me through until my third comes in on Saturday. I try not to overfill the trays if I can help it. If I really load them up I will go on a full 24+* hour cycle @ 165 degrees.

My thoughts as well. My climate only allows me to grow 4 months a year without any extra heaters or air conditioners.

That's a good idea. I should try it sometime. I just want to minimize drying time to reduce oxidation as much as possible because I store for long periods of time for personal use.

I believe I saw a post you made about that a while back if I remember correctly. I forgot about it. this might be a viable option for future grows. I'm set now though lol.

I was just saying that as a mode of starting the drying process while space frees up in the dehydrator

:whathesaid:

If you have the stuff laying around, go ahead and get them started. I wouldn't go buying a fan and such though.

If you don't, throwing them in the fridge for a couple days won't hurt them too much.

You would also be amazed at just how much you can cram in a dehydrator when you have to. You can have some fairly big gaps between trays. They'll probably stick together and not be as pretty, but if you have that much they don't need to be pretty, they need to be preserved.

Find a 5 gallon bucket
Cut the bottom off of said five gallon bucket.
Put it on your dehydrator.
Fill with mushrooms and put a vented lid on it.
Turn on dehydrator and wait

Ta-dah

Stirring helps but isn’t neccesary.

The hanging tiered drying racks used for cannabis work great too, tons of space just put a box fan underneath.
